I am having a problem with my IE, right now I'm using IE 6, but i have windows 98 se and I just reformatted my hard drive. So the original version a few days ago was IE5. I have noticed that i am not able to view jpgs on several different pages. the images, instead show up as the little boxes with the red x in the middle. I have also tried right clicking on the images and selecting show pictures. nothing happens. someone told me to try reinstalling IE5, but microsoft says there isn't a way to uninstall IE5 from Win98, is that true? I am using norton security, but it's only set to medium, my IE security is also set to medium, i've tried changing it to something lower and then changing it back. what to do?

Open up internet explorer. Click on Tools and select internet options. Click on the advance tab. Scroll down to the multimedia bit (near the bottom) and make sure you have the show pictures box ticked.
As for uninstalling ie 5, I think your friend is right, you can not uninstall it OR reinstall an earlier version, so if you upgrade to a higher version that wrecks you PC, there's no going back.
Hope this helps.

So Microsoft says it cannot be removed, yes it can, any version from 3.0 up to 6.0 with exception of XP. See site below IEradicator
http://www.98lite.net/ieradicator.html
On another note, for viewing many different formats of pictures Irfanviewer is a great little download. Has picture editing features, shows in thumbnails, plays video, and it is about 700kb in size free.

Microsoft says IE cannot be removed---
Companys seldom get involved in anything they did not create. Thus their statement. What they mean is that THEY have not provided a way to remove it. They don't want you to go elsewhere.
Yes, IEradicator will remove (really eradicate) IE. IE6 works for me. So going back might not help the problem. Do jpeg files open when called from your own disk? If not, you have to set up some program to view them, although IE should do it. Go to:My Computer>View>Folder Options>File Types
and scroll down to 'JPEG IMAGE'. That will show what is set up to open jpeg.

i had that prob with the little red x
go to internet options,
advanced,
mutimedia,
check show image download placeholders
seems strange but worked for me
cheers

OK, I had/have the same problem. Upgraded to IE6 and Irfanview soon after. I began to have some web pages appear with the red Xs. Show pix doesn't work. I uninstalled Irfanview. This re-registered jpgs with IE. Then re-installed but did not create any file associations. This seemed to help but not cure things.
I found that by going to the view/encoding tab on the browser and selecting a different encoding the problem went away. Auto-select was 'Off'. Turning this 'On' does not seem to help. Usually checking encoding shows Western Windows (ISO), changing to West... (windows)solves the problem.
I don't understand this but it works. Perhaps someone else knows how to correct this?
*Viewing same page from NT 2000 server using IE v5 works fine in West ... (ISO).
A Bug in IE6 maybe? :(
