Ok, so I don't know that much about computers, however I was just attempting to clear some old program files from my work computer (not a good idea).
Anyway, while trying to remove a file (a games file mind you...) the computer froze up.
So I rebooted it, the screen came up with an error message about a missing systems file and that it can't start explorer.exe
So I reboot it again and attempt to reinstall windows, but I just ended up with a black screen!!!
Can anyone help me? I have all my financial and business files in there!!!
E-mail it to me if ya can!!!

At what point did you end up with a black screen? We need to know if Windows started installing or not. Run through what you did.
Otherwise it sounds as if you nipped out a system file in error. Give us the exact error message. It may just be a matter of sending a file but we need to know which one (there are thousands).

I don't remember what the error message was but it was a missing systems file
And it comes to the blank screen first thing, no windows screen, no login screen, nothing...the only reason I know its on is that the power light blinks yellow frequently
I've ended up with this screen before and I had to send it to get reformatted, this time, however, I'm working with important files that I can't lose!!!

ok, sorry, let me try this again, I'm a little bit anxious about this
first thing I did was uninstall some programs, it used to be used for playing children's games. However, since my computer was becoming sluggish, I uninstalled a few of them.
Then I went to program files to delete those game files that wouldn't uninstall...I ran into some downloaded program and tried to delete that...however the computer froze up.
I restarted the computer and ended up with an error message about a missing file under Microsoft Systems? I think, something similar...then a white box pops-up saying that it can't start explorer.exe and that I'll need to reinstall Windows
So I shut down the computer and insert the Windows disk and restart the computer...same messages...
Well, stupid me I decide to reboot it a few more times, then blank...nothing, nada, zip
I end up with a completely blank screen and it hasn't done anything since.
This has happened before while trying to (again) uninstall and restart the computer and I had to get it reformatted, and I lost all my files. Can somebody help me please? I can't afford to lose those files this time...I would have sent it off to data recovery, but I'm a little tight on money lately and would rather find an alternative.

By 'nothing on the screen' do you mean when you first turn it on you don't get the normal posting screen or manufacturer's logo? Or do you mean you get that but then nothing when windows is supposed to load?

ok...never mind, just attempted switching the monitor, but I have still have the error message:
Missing file: C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/MSVCRT.DLL
And it just freezes there, I can't get to safe mode either...
Can anyone help? Soon...please?

I just sent the file. It may not be the version you need however. If you do a google search you can find download sites. Or you can run SFC on another 98 computer and extract the file from the 98 cd and then copy it to the other computer.

thx for all your help everyone...this is kinda stressful
we had called technical support last night, and they said we'll need to completely reformat the computer
At the moment, we're only trying to back-up files in the command prompt
However, I could use some advice on how to reformat...(I know, I'm speeding by old problems kinda quick, but I'll need my files back soon...)

Technical Support always tells you to reformat.
Inquiring minds are curious as to how the file that DAVE sent you worked out
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Don't rush to reformat and lose everything.
If that file doesn't do the trick you should be able to just reload Windows in again over the top and this will retain your own files. It usually works out fine and at the worst it will be much easier to get your files off using Windows rather than DOS.
We can help you through the overlay steps as necessary.
You can still reformat later if you really have to.
