Subject: can't see clients on Microsoft Network
|
Comment: I work on a Novell network with 5.0 servers and 3.3 clients. In many areas, we have small labs with local printers and use Microsoft Print Sharing so the lab computers have access. I know I'm sharing the printer and everything should work, but SOMETIMES, i can't see anything on the Microsoft network. 1) Host computer has "Print Sharing" turned on 2) Host computer is sharing the printer 3) All machines are running Client for Microsoft Networks In one lab, when i was setting up the network printer and it asks you to "browse", i couldn't find the shared printer, BUT, when i put in the address as \\computer name\share name, it found it just fine. any one know why this happens?? thanks ALOT!

Reply: (edit)Client Services for Netware. If I understand your problem correctly it sounds like you need to install and configure this. In the above comments you refer to Client for Microsoft Networks which will work with NT servers, not Novell. What OSes do the clients run?

Reply: (edit)We run mostly Windows 98 with a Novell 3.3 client. On some machines, i can go to Network Neighborhood and add the "Client for Microsoft Networks" and when i reboot, i can see the microsoft workgroups. On other machines on the SAME network, i can add "Client for Microsoft Networks" and i don't see the worksgroups that i KNOW are there...but if i want to map a drive or add a network printer, i can put in the path \\computer\resource i can add it. i don't understand why on some machines i can see them and others i can't.

Reply: (edit)Can you give me a verbal description of your network? How many PC's(are they all running Win 98?), any subnets(?), any servers(?) Are all software versions the same in all instances? You opening comments are a bit too vague to provide any real answers. I'll check back later.

Reply: (edit)Novell network 5.1 servers web server is windows 2000 3.3 novell clients roughly 300 machines (total) 2 subnets mostly windows 98 some windows 95 it's wierd, because i can have the exact same setup in the same building (same novell client, and also client for microsoft networks loaded), but on some computers i can see Novell servers/stuff AND Windows Workgroups and windows shared printers, but on others i only see the usual novell stuff. i just can't seem to find what's different. AND if i type in the path \\server\share, it will show up, but i just can't SEE them when i go to network neighborhood and look at "entire network".

Reply: (edit)Did you find a solution? I'm having roughly the same problem: Novell 4.2 server, 2.5 Clients, MinME and Win98SE. The "Entire Network" shows Netware icons but no workgroup. If I specify the path e.g. \\client\printer it works fine. Starting about two weeks ago the workgroup icon disappeared on one client after another. No one had made any changes to the configs. I read some thing about Browse Master looking with the wrong protocol, made sense. Microsoft offers a fix but I'm in Mexico and they have no idea what I'm talking about. KB Article Q284084 I hope this sheds some light on your problem and that you can shed some light on mine! Doug

Reply: (edit)Under W98SE, I found that sometimes I had to enable print and file sharing on a PC, set up a dummy directory, share it, then after rebooting return to my non-sharing mode by turning off print and file sharing before Windows would allow me to see shared directories on my workgroup.
