Comment:

My windows 98 system is not recognising the existence of my CD-ROM drive. Both My Computer and DOS windows tell me that only the two hard drives and the floppy exist, but BIOS recognises the drive fine and I can boot from it. My Windows Start up disk is corrupt, and I can't make another without access to the CD-ROM drive.

Bernard,

Check out http://www.bootdisk.com/ to download a boot disk.

In the control panel open the SYSTEM icon and open the tab device manager and open the cdrom and see if it is listed. If it is click settings tab and near the bottom set the drive you want the cdrom to be. If not try adding these lines to your config.sys and autoexec.bat files and reboot and do it all over again. It should be there now, click settings again and set the cdrom drive letter and reboot.

My config.sys...
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe
lastdrive=z
DEVICE=C:\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD002 /N:2

My autoexec.bat...
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\mscdex.exe /d:mscd002 /M:16 /L:Z

Note: First find the oakcdrom.sys file on your windows boot disk and copy it to c:\

Hope this works for you...
