can't run defrag?!?!?!??!?

I am trying to run a defrag on a windows 98 workstation and am getting the error message that it does not have sufficient memory and that I need to close some programs and try again. Only problem is that I'm already running it in safe mode, with all screen savers turned off and the only program running is explorer, which is neccesary to run defrag. Any ideas?????

The error occurs because the cluster size is incorrect in relation to the size of the partition. This can occur if you use a ghost-like utility to copy a smaller drive to a larger one. Your options are to recreate the partition, or adjust the size using Partition Magic.

well, after running a CHKDSK, it appears that THAT is the problem. It is a 16 gig hard drive and it has the default cluster size of 4096 KB. Only problem is that this computer was built from an OEM and hasn't been partitioned by any kind of Ghost utility.

Well, however the particular partition was either created or copied, the cluster size has been changed to something other than the default.

It doesn't much matter how or why it was done. The fix is the same. The cluster size has to be corrected.
