Can't restart in Dos mode from 98

Having recently installed Windows 98 on my desktop I now can't restart in Dos mode from the shutdown menu. I can get to DOS by booting with a floppy, or through the command prompt option using F8. I suppose some file or files may be corrupted. I would be grateful for some information on fixing this problem.
