I just cleaned computer and replaced CMOS battery. On startup I get Error Message C:WINDOWS\temp\GLB8131.temp "Validation failed for C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSINIT.dll. you probably are missing a necessary root certificate", and I lost Zone Alarm firewall. If I try to unstall Zone Alarm I get the same message. How do I get around this and reinstall Zone Alarm? Thank you

Why did you replace the CMOS battery? After doing that, did you correct all the BIOS settings?
Try booting into safe mode & running the uninstall from there
Hellz Yea!

The manual says to replace after two years and I have had the computer 6 years. Worked fine just thought it a good idea. I have never changed the bios and I understand that when you replace battery you get the default settings. I will try the Safe Mode. Thanks

Yes, you get the default settings (which are rarely correct) & the date/time also reverts back to when the board/BIOS was 1st made. So unless you corrected it, your PC thinks it's 1998 +/-

I can't get into Safe Mode by f8 Using "Enable Startup Menu" from Advanced trouble shooting settings gets me to the correct screen but won't allow me to get out of the normal mode, i.e arrows don't move the choice, F5 doesn't do it , or three doesn't do it. These problems tend to metastasize. Is it recovery disk time? Thanks

I think that with WIN 98 you need to hold the ctrl key down during the boot process to access the safe mode. Vicks
