I get the following message when I re-start my computer: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose (I didn't!), try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program (tried this, but Norton is no longer showing up on Add/Remove programs list under settings). C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386 and C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~\NAVAP.VXD show up and I am instructed "click to continue".
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

If you have the NORTON CD, reinstall it
and then use the UNINSTALL feature from
PROGRAMS>NORTON ANTIVIRUS>UNINSTALL.

Look in system.ini first. do a file search and double click it.
If there is no norton related stuff there, then it's likely a left over register key. Add/Remove programs doesn't always do a good cleanup job.
Back up your registry first, and then start / run / regedit and do a find on "Norton". (no quotes)
If you chose to do something like uninstall norton commander but still want to keep Norton AV this becomes more difficult. You should be able to delete all instances that has norton in its entry name.
Then if you want to keep NAV, reinstall just that.

This is a very common issue with 95/98. It is pretty easy to resolve. These files are still being referenced in the registry but the files are not physically on your disk anymore. What you will have to do is open the registry editor (regedit.exe) from a dos/command prompt. Search the registry for the file names listed in error message (SYMEVNT.386; NAVAP.VXD). On the right(details) side of the screen, highlite the key that is loading that file and delete it. Backup your registry files first, they are in your windows folder and are named SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT.

Go to the Symantec website for instructions on how to uninstall this software.
Alternatively, go to my website below and lookup tutorial "Computer slow to start". That will give you the various registry locations to search for the Nortons startup instructions which are causing this error to appear.

Hi,
Use the RNAV.exe utility from Symantec
http://service4.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/df0a595864594c86852567ac0063608c/33497f6e8a319ece88256ace0076cc02?OpenDocument
The page has a link for the RNAV utility program and full manual instructions
