I need to reload windows 95 due to loss of system font and whatever manages it. When I run windows 95 setup it tells me that I have to remove IE 4.0 but I have 5.0 installed. When I fall back to 4.0 it won't allow me to remove it as I have no back-up. Is there a way to force Windows setup to run in the "replace missing or corrupt files mode"?

when you install a font via the control panel it is entered into registry.
when you install an older application that installs a new font it puts an entry in win.ini. windows then uses this to write a registry entry and doesn't look at the win.ini entry again.
all true-type fonts are placed in one single composite .ttf file but with an associate hidden file named ttfcache. both these files are required and they combine ( as data and header info )
consequently the only way to remove any true type font is through control panel, fonts.
raster fonts ( bitmaps) and vector fonts (for eg plotters) have a .fon extension.
I detail this as repairing the fonts might be the best option, even removing them one by one and putting them back.anyhow:
vector font ....modern.fon in c:\windows\system\color
raster fonts are listed in registry..
hkey_current_config\display\fonts
true type fonts:
registry key hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\fonts..sorry I'm making this more complicated than need be. But, windows falls over if you tell it to use a font it hasn't got. So if I were you I would create e new folder and dump good versions of all suspect fonts in there. Then through control panel, delete the duff counterparts and re-install by browsing to the new folder. you can't install a font that's already in that folder, and installing from the new folder results in the file being copied to c:\windows\fonts and the registry entry made.
it would be wise to read the help in windows on this as well to confirm what I've described since I quote from memory and win98, but the principle is good ,just check the details please.
remember the ttf in c:\windows\fonts may be ok . so you could copy it from there to the new folder, delete the registry entry via control panel only to copy it back.this all makes sense to me but I'm not sure it would if I hadn't written it and I'm sure someone else can explain it ore clearly. But it has to be easier than re-installing the system.
If you can be specific about the reason you have for suspecting a font(s) then me/another may be able to give a clearer solution.
