Greetings everyone,

First of all I am running Win95a on a Packard Bell 4610, Pentium, 120 Mhz/72RAM.

Due to an 'unexpected fall' this weekend, which gave me a few days off work, I decided to pass some time by uninstalling some of my programs (of which Ad-Aware 6 was one) off my main hard drive and putting them on my spare drive (I have a 4 GB drive partitioned into two 2 GB drives... 'C' is my main drive and 'E' I have been using to download programs onto).

Well this 'time-killing' operation worked fine until I uninstalled Ad-Aware 6 and then tried to download and then reinstall it on my spare drive. The download seemed to go okay but when I tried to install it the 'Wise Installation Wizard' started but then disappeared after only a few seconds.

In a nutshell I can't seem to get the program reinstalled again. For the record I uninstalled the previous copy from the Add/Remove Programs and I did reboot after uninstalling and before redownloading.

I have also posted this on the Lavasoft Forum but with no results up to this point. I am posting it here just in case anyone else has experienced the same problem.

Any ideas before my wife throws the computer and myself into the street?

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Have you tried re-downloading it? It may have somehow become corrupted...

Phil -

I have the same problem running it on Windows 95a.

As you'll see here:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

It doesn't seem to support Windows 95:

"The freeware* version of Ad-aware is compatible with Windows 98/98SE/ME/NT4, Windows 2000 + Windows XP ®

Hopefully, you still have your old download (an earlier build).

Good luck.

Hi C_Legend,

No ... dummy me. I deleted the previous download before doing the new one.

Hi jboy,

Thanks for popping in. I went to Oldversions and checked it out earlier. Even downloaded and installed the 5.83 version and it loaded up fine.

However, I am under the impression that since the current built is 181 that I wouldn't be able to update the older version.

Hopefully someone out there has the previous 6.0 that worked with Win95a.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Hey, Phil.

Sure, as a 95 user myself, more than a little dissappointed in the loss of support.

Are you saying that v6.0 was ok with '95?

Still - if lavasoft is only providing updates for v6.181, then older builds are of limited benefit.

The 'PRO' version installs ok on '95A but did not function properly (for me, at least)

On '98SE - no problem.

Hi jboy,

Yep ... I was using Ad-Aware 6.0.181 on my Win95a as late as last night before I got this brainy idea of putting it on another drive ... lol

Now for some reason it won't install. The only major thing I have done before uninstalling it was I updated Spybot S&D to version 1.3.

It is not running in the background as far as I know so I don't know what the scoop is.

Thanks for replying back,

Phil

Ok - I wasn't sure quite what to make of the 'final' version - I don't believe Lavasoft explicitly denies (or confirms) continued support for 95. Skimmed their forums a few times, but didn't see any references.

Still running the old (1.2) version of Spybot on this 95 box - the new version does seem to scan considerably faster though.

My systems are reasonably 'clean' - generally all that's ever found these days are the occasional cookie - but it would be nice to have ad-aware scanning.

Hi jboy,

Yes, I think the new Spybot version (1.3) is much faster than the previous one too. Anything that goes faster on my old 'clunker' really helps ...lol

I just hope I can get the Ad-Aware 6.0 back on the old 'puter. Between the two of them ... even though they did conflict ... it was a fairly good tandum.

Have a good one!

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Phil, email me. (Click on my name.) I've got an older version of AdAware6 archived. I'm not sure which build it is without actually installing it, but it may be what you're looking for.

Hi Dave357,

Great to hear from you again. Sorry for the delay in answering but I have been busy getting my Ad-Aware 6 program in working order.

And ... work it does!

I really appreciate your kindness of offering an archived version for me to try on my system, but it is no longer necessary.

Another friend of mine sent me a copy of his 6.0.181 version and it downloaded and installed as easy as eating apple pie.

I don't know what was happening with my attempts at downloading off the net, but his zip file did the trick.

Once again I really appreciate you taking the time to attempt to help me. But then, like I have always said, that is what makes this forum stand out above all the rest. There is a genuine willingness to help us 'newbies'.

Rest assured, I for one, appreciate it.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

So, you've installed essentially the same version (6.0.181)- but from a different download?

Have you been able to run the program successfully?

Hi jboy and Dave357,

Yes it is the same version (6.0.181) I originally had before I started all this 'shifting' around.

My friend just emailed me his 'zipped' Lavasoft folder. Once I unzipped it I put the whole thing in my E/Programs folder, installed it and lived happily ever after ... lol

Now it is working just like before and is doing the job now that I have restored my personal settings.

I don't know why the computer wasn't allowing me to download and install it myself off the web.

The one major thing I did before trying to move Ad-Aware from one drive to another was download and install the new SpyBot S&D version 1.3.

I am no computer 'geru' by any means but I feel there must have been some conflict between the two in this situation.

Now they are both installed and both are doing the job I expect from each of them.

For the record, I have been off work the last three days. I decided to do a picture-perfect front flip (not on purpose ... lol) while walking down a paved concrete hill. I think the flip was almost perfect ... the landing left a lot to be desired ...lol

Turns out I sprained my ankle. So I have been working on computer 'projects'(messing things up) and getting in my wife's hair. Time to go back to work tomorrow.

Thanks for posting and offering your suggestions too. Have a great day!

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Hi Phil, everyone

Right, I did notice your 'unexpected fall' mentioned back there - hope you are well (holidays are never unwelcome though)

One-track mind wrt computers (likely it's a weakness)

Well, that's encouraging if A-A6 runs alright on your 95 machine - I'd given up after installing the Pro version and having it stop unexpectedly - will try again.

Take care.

Hi jboy,

I would be more than happy to try sending you a copy of the 'Lavasoft' zip folder I received if that would help you out any.
