i have windows 95 and am connected to a home network (that is connected to a cable modem). a few weeks ago, i couldn't get on any internet applications and still can't. when i go to ip config or winipconfig, it say "FATAL ERROR: Can't Read IP Configuration". the strange thing is the computer can talk over the network-i need help

How did you connect your home network to the modem? If you are running WIN98SE on one of your computers and it has 2 network cards, you can share your Internet connection across your home network but it takes some messing around to setup. Directions for this are in the HELP files for WIN98SE.
If you ran the CAT5 cable out of your modem into your network HUB, you probably won’t be able to connect to the Internet. You will need a ROUTER/SWITCH. The router portion connects to modem and emulates a single PC to the modem. It then shares the Internet connection with the PCs attached to the switch portion, which allows the PCs to communicate with each other.

Sounds like something has happened to TCP/IP hence no internet, while the computer is talking to other computers using a different protocol. You can check this via control panel networks.
The MS Document Q140903 accessed via:
http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.aspmight be useful. When I had it happen it was due to a network card that was not properly installed. But I would think the first thing to try would be reinstalling TCP/IP.

but i dont know how to reinstall the tcp/ip- and i have a network card on the computer which is hooked up to the network- i get the internet over that

Go to “Start”, “Settings”, “Control Panel”. Select “Network”. On the “Configuration” tab select “Add”. Select “Protocol” and push “Add”. Select “Microsoft” and in the box on the right, select “TCP/IP” and push “OK”.
