Can't read from extra cd ROM drive

I have the Ahead Nero Software for buringin cds and my computer is telling me it can't read from the add-on cd drive, as the device is not ready. I think this is stopping me from burning cds, though error messages are given when this happens - the add-on cd drive just stays strangely quiet. Any ideas on the problem or what to do?

Check that the 3 cables are connected to the drive. You need only one sound cable for 2 cdrom drives,so you have to choose which one has that cable.Check that the jumpers are set Master(MS) or Slave(SL).Slave is used for the second unit on the IDE port if used.Check that the drive works normally with a commercial CD with music or a video game.Check if the drive is detected in the System properties.Make sure a CD or CDR is in the drive. The laser used for burning is different from the reading one.Good luck.

In addition to the above, what do you mean by 'add-on cd drive'? Is it just another internal cdrom? Is it an external?
