Hello again:
I have more specifics about a problem I've had since last month, and hope you can guide me as to what I should do next. :-)
I'm running Win 98SE and use AOL 7.0 on a dial up modem. I also have Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1.

When I'm using AOL's browser (Mozilla--(aka IE 4.0)) and click the print button to print the page I'm looking at, AOL's Print Central page pops up, I click "OK" to print, then the Print Central window AND the BROWSER window BOTH disappear! THEN a message box pops up that reads:

IE Script Error
Line: 228
Char: 1
Error: 'dialogArguments._IE_ PrintType' is null or not an object
Code 0
URL res://c:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg

This has happened using AOL's browser on EVERY web page I've tried to print but one (Symantec) http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/pfdocs/2001101614331706

-my version of shdoclc.dll is 6.0.2800.1106 (matches my IE 6, SP 1)
and is 521 kb in size
-I tried renaming shdoclc.dll to shdoclc.old, but I still couldn't print (the browser closed but the error message didn't pop up)
-I used Word to open a COPY of shdoclc.dll that I'd made, and found that one font mentioned was "ms sans serif" but I don't have it listed in the fonts folder
-my iepeers.dll file is 226kb, ver 6.0.2800.1106
____

--I CAN right click the web page in the frame I want printed, the list of choices pops up, I choose "print" and THEN it will print, but I'm not the only one in my household using this computer.
--I CAN print from IE 6 while online.

WHEN OFFLINE, and I click print to print a saved web page, the error does NOT occur at all, with either browser, and the pages print fine.

If anyone has the same configuration of Win98SE, IE 6sp1, and aol 7.0, would you please let me know if the version and size of your shdoclc.dll file matches mine?

Would it help if I edited the shdoclc.dll file by changing the fonts from those I don't have to those I do have? Suggestions as to what font to substitute would be appreciated.

Do I somehow have the wrong version of shdoclc.dll?

I've tried a lot of other fixes, too, listed below.

Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely,
Jo

-Both the upgrade to Win 98SE (up from Win 98) and IE 6.0SP1 were both downloads. I do have a Dell Windows restore disk.
-I have version 5.00.3809 of VM which is supposedly the newest version.

I have also:
-deleted my *.tmp files
-ran scandisk (3x)
-ran defrag (3x)
-repaired IE 6 (3x)
-deleted all temporary internet files, cookies and history (several times)
-tried AOL's new "fixit" feature (twice), but it didn't correct the problem.
-talked to aol online live tech help (twice) and phoned aol tech support (twice)
-completely uninstalled and reinstalled AOL 7.0. Three times.
-ran system file checker (no corrupted files)
-regsrv32 'ed several dlls
-removed then reloaded printer driver
-reset Internet Explorer advanced options to default
-run antivirus, trojan scan, ad aware & spybot diagnostics, and my system is clean.
-upgraded quicktime
-upgraded to flashplayer 6
-checked for updated video driver (none)

Hi Jo

I use Win 98SE and AOL 7.0 but have IE 5.5 (hadn't upgraded it because AOL has IE embedded anyway).

My shdoclc.dll file is therefore 5.50.4134.600 size: 383k/393.216 used

Whilst I usually use right click/print I tried printing from the button on the AOL toolbar and it worked fine.

I can only suspect that reverting to IE 5.5 may solve your problem.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Hi, p2pnut,

Thanks so much for your reply. I'm glad you're not having the error message. It gives me hope that the fix for it is out there somewhere. :-)

I was saving the "restore to previous version" as a last resort. Earlier today I tried it, which took me back to IE 5.5 SP2. I went online, and STILL get that doggone error! In my 8 years of using AOL, this is the first problem I've encountered that couldn't easily be solved! One tech rep suggested I format my drive and start over, the other said it wasn't an AOL problem and that I needed to check the Microsoft website or my PC's mfg. My feeling is if it only happens online with AOL's browser, it "IS" AOL's problem.

On the other hand, I know that software doesn't always "play well with others". When I find the fix I will post it here in hopes it will help someone else.

Thanks again for the suggestion. :-)

Sincerely,
Jo
