All,
I've just added another jack to the network. However the PC cannot see the network or map any drives. Here are the details:
1. The PC which won't connect is configured properly because is connects from any other office.
2. The lights on the NIC light up as always.
3. The 3Com Office Connect hub shows a good connection at that port (connection at 100mbs). The status lights are the same as all the other working ports.
4. The new cable is around 90feet (shorter than the longest current working connection) but does come near a florescent light.Techtony suggested that I check the loaded protocols and to try to ping 127.0.0.1 and other machines. I did with the following results....
I can ping 127.0.0.1 but not the other machines. I took this same PC to another office and plugged it in. It connects just fine to everything, so all the correct protocols must be loaded and working.
Again, though, at this newly wired jack, the card lights up fine and the 3Com hub indicatates a good connection at that port(same status lights as all the other ports).
** One other thing: the cable for this new connection runs from the patch pannel at the hub DIRECTLY into the back of the PC. In other words, the cabling is as follows:
Hub > Patch Cable > Patch Pannel > Long/Main Cable through rafters (apprx 90 ft) up through floor directly into the card.
Any additional advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks much !

Just because the lights go on, does not mean the cabling is right. I would try a Cross Over cable from the hub to the pathc panel.
The fact that you "just" add the cable makes me really supicious that something is not right.
Hope this helps...

I would concur. Try re ending the cable
and also try a cross over cable, although
this should not be necessary in this
situation. You could also try one of the cables that
work for another machine. If it works with
another cable but not the original, then
there is a problem with the original cable.
Reending would be the solution in that
case.
