can't open rtf files in officexp

Can anyone help? I can't sem to open an attachment that has been sent to me by someone. This is an rtf file(rich text format).
when i try to open it i'm getting the error message saying "can't create file (filename), right click the folder you want o create the file in, and then click properties to check the permissions of the folder." I am running office xp and have installed service packs 1, and 2 but this has made no difference.
