Your .doc attachment is likely a Microsoft Word document. Have they that sent you the attachment send it to you in a universal format, such as HTML or PDF. It's rude (or ignorant) of them to just assume you've spent the hundreds of dollars to have/use Microsoft Word.

If you are using Outlook Express, go to Tools/Options/Security and make sure that 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus' is not checked.

DOWNLOAD THIS . It's a program from Microsoft that allows you to read any .doc document. Be aware, it's about a 4 meg download..

You can download a Word Reader program from Microsoft (that's what jack hall is suggesting). The Reader will allow you view the document and probably print it, but you will not be able to make changes.

Microsoft Word, while a closed format, is widely used in offices and home computers. If your work uses Word exclusively, as mine does, you may have to bite the bullet and invest in some software. For instance if your office sends you a Word document and wants you to send it back with your changes, there's no alternative than to buy Word.

Word and other MS Office titles have come down considerably in price over the past couple of years, and you can often find used copies.

Otherwise, download and install OpenOffice. It's an open-source release of StarOffice. It is mostly compatible with Microsoft Office, free, and better software than Microsoft Works.

Best Wishes,
Bob
