For some reason, I cannot open up my control panel. If I click the icon, nothing happens. If I open through the explorer bar, it freezes. Does anyone have a solution to this problem, I really need to remove a program on Add/Remove Programs.

Hi Matt, Hi Krystyna, Hi beansoup Hi all.
You could also try Start/Search/and type Control Panel. When you get it, right click on it and make a shortcut to the desktop.
Then Just open it from there. I keep Control Panel and Windows Explorer on my desktop as I use them a lot. Hope this helps. Have a nice day all.

hi matt and everyone, cant remember where Ive seen this B4 but found a thread that might help from Annoyances.org
"Download, unzip and run CoolWebShredder. If this doesn't correct all of the
problem, then you need to replace the Control.exe file.Download this copy of CONTROL.exe. (Win98 & 98 SE)
Go to the location you downloaded the file, right-click it and select COPY.
Next select Start/Run, type C:\WINDOWS in the 'Open' box and press enter.
Now right-click in the Windows folder that opened and select PASTE.
If prompted to overwrite the file, answer 'Y'....YES.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/r1074304048.hope this helps, maybe run AV first? and something like spybotsearch and destroy or adaware to help stop infection.

You most likely have A variant of the CoolWebSearch on your system. Download and run from your desktop CW-Shredder , hit the scan button then the fix button, let it run and fix what it finds. Next you have to replace your version of control.exe, that files is located in your Windows folder (C:\Windows). The file that is there now is a bogus file - delete it if the Shredder hasn't already done it for you. You can get a fresh copy from your Windows CD , restore disk, or cab files. It's in a folder called Win98 for Windows98 or Win9X for Windows ME. For Windows 98 - look for Win98_44.cab. Windows ME, look for Win9X_16.cab. You can also download it here: Control.exe for Windows ME
Control.exe for Windows 98. While you are in the Windows folder, stroll down and look at rundll32.exe, right click on it and choose properties, that file should be about 24kb, if not replace it also. You can download a fresh copy of rundll32.exe HERE. (Use 'drivers' and 'all' as user id and password). If after doing that you still can't get into the control panel, download HiJackThis and run a scan of your system. Check entries 05, 06, and 07, if they exist, have HJT fix them, reboot, see if the system is OK now.

You should also download and run SpyBot to get rid of the rest of the junk on your system, just make sure you update it first. A good virus scan won't hurt ---> Panda ActiveScan-VirusCheck. Install SpywareBlaster to prevent problems like this<---this is important!
