I can't access my cd-rom in safe mode and in Command Prompt. Do i need to find a cd-rom driver? where & how? please help me, -cloudtwist-

Reply: (edit) Try cdrom as your #1 bootdisk in bios setup, and then load with cdrom in start up menu. After that, type in fdisk and then restart the computer. When the startup menu comes up, just click on the set up with cdrom and then follow instructions, format disk and setup after. If these things don't work, try to find the cdrom system files, is it a nec, atapi, creative or other types of cdrom. need drivers? go to "www.winfiles.com". email me if you need help. if you have files such as win98_36.cab,win98_37.cab,win98_38.cab,win98_39.cab, win98_40.cab,win98_41.cab and win98_42.cab, email me please....give me these files. These files are in the win98 fold of the win98 se cdrom. Please help me

Reply: (edit)What kind of computer do you have? How much memory do you have? You are out of memory so you can only run in safe mode. Install 32 MB memory chip. My wife was having the same problem. I installed the 32MB memory chips to her 16MB Hp pavillian and now she uses win 98 ,intel video etc. after I added a USB plug and camera. You need to go to best buy or somewhere similar and buy a memory chip upgrade for your brand of computer. You can install it or they can if it's under warrantee they might help you.

Reply: (edit)Cloud, At the "C" prompt type in [c:\cd c:\windows\options\cabs] and hit enter. Now type in setup and install. This should get you in to atleast Safe Mode, butt your operating system is pretty well screwed. One problem that you will encounter at the end of setup Win98 trys to copy the cab files onto themselves and gives a time out message to clean your CD. Iqnore this because it can't be done and cancel. You will be prompted to re-run setup but it won't complete then either so ignore that also. When you can start in Windows, either regular or Safe Mode, run the System File Checker from accessories, system tools, system information, tools tab or by typing in SFC in the run Window. Boy you got a lot of suggestions, some of them might work but.......

Reply: (edit)thanks everyone!!! i really appreciate all the suggestions :D unfortunately my comp still doesn't work John: I'm gonna try your suggestion tonight Weldit65:my comp has 64 MB of memory i was able to boot with a floppy and attempted to reinstall win98se but i wasn't paying attention while it did it's 30 minute thing and apparently it tried to restart itself but never achieved the actual restart. and from there on win98se won't startup at all. methinks that i am going to use 'fdisk' tonight to reformat the harddrive (after i try John's suggetion). i've never used fdisk before is there anything i should know??
