It doesn't work when it come to me.

It has a harddisk and floppy only, NO CDROM.
I formatted the harddisk into 2 partitions.
I copied the win98SE CD to the harddisk with another computer to D:
I boot with win98 boot disk,
and run setup.
but it failed after showing "fault outside of MS-DOS Extender"

how can I solve this?

Standard Mode Messages
If you get any of the following error messages, remove any memory managers (such as EMM386.exe, QEMM, or 386Max) from your Config.sys file, and then run Setup again.

Standard Mode: Invalid DPMI return.
* Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender*
Standard Mode: Bad Fault in MS-DOS Extender.
Standard Mode: Unknown stack in fault dispatcher.
Standard Mode: Stack Overflow.

NOTE: If you still have problems, add EMM386.exe back into your Config.sys file and exclude all ranges. For example,

device=emm386.exe x=A000-FFFF

To turn on double buffering, add the following line to the beginning of your Config.sys file:

device=smartdrv.exe /double_buffer+

Bad ram is also possible. If possible swap it out with other ram.

to the harddisk with another computer to D:

if you did that, just go ahead and install W98 with the other computer,
copy the W98 folder to the drive also,
[you'll need it without a cd],
copy any and all drivers to that folder in a sub folder of their own,
THEN, go in and delete any and all drivers, etc, which windows installed when in the other computer,
transfer the hard drive back to the laptop,
and let it find what it needs as it boots,
[new hardware found, etc, you'll have the drivers so you can 'browse' to them,
this way is easy, try it,

hope this helped,
have a good day
