Subject: Can't install Win98 on my VIAchip/K6-2 300
Comment:

I'm trying to install Win98, and can't. I've got the FIC VA-503+ MoBo with PC100 RAM, and an AMD K6-2 (300). I talked to MS, ans they told me to simply adjust the bus speed to 66MHz.

That didn't work. I tried different jumper settings, and still, the install locks up.

Here's the problem: Win98, loading onto a clean drive from either a CD or the C: Drive, loads up the installation wizard, and then locks up, except for mouse movement. A little black rectangle appears in the middle of the screen, and that's it. This happens right as the floppy drive is accessed.

I think this may be because I have an LS-120, and not a floppy, but MS says that's not it...

I've also tried turning off the caches. With them off, and the bus at 66MHz, I'm able to read the error during the install, it says "run-time error R6003
Integer divide by 0"

Can I boot up my system without using a floppy? Can I somehow copy the bootup files onto the C: Drive?

Thanks much,
hip

When you say bus speeds, which are you referring? I had somewhat similar problems, but mine came on my K6-2 350 MHz on a FIC VA-503+ Motherboard. I ran a 100 MHz FSB, with a clock multiplier of 3.5. Core Voltage set to 2.2 volts, per the chip instructions. I thought I had "true" PC-100 RAM, but it turned out that mine was PC-100, but the PSB wasn't. Thus, I set my RAM frequency to 66 MHz (keeping the 100 MHz setting for my FSB), and I have not had a problem since.

Try this if you haven't already done so. Check to make sure all your connections are in good, especially your video card. My bet would be on the RAM, though.

Hm, I don't know about PSB...

My jumpers are 3 x 100, but I lowered them to 66 x 4.5. The system wouldn't boot until I changed the memory jumpers to 66MHz as well...

I have not had problems loading Windows 98
on my K6-2 400MHz, 100MHz Buss with SD100
RAM.

I had some of the same problems. I try a new Ultra ATA 66 Cable, one with the blue connector, and my problem was gone. I was able to run fdisk, format from O/S,and install Windows 98.2,from which I was not able to do earlier.I had a error of run time R6003 divide by zero. Everything is ok now.
