Subject: can't install OS on new HD correctly
Comment:

I've gotten a new Maxtor 30GB HD and when I booted my computer, they asked for the setup disk and so I set up my HD the way it said I should. Then as it began to start up, it got to the "Starting Windows 98..." screen and something else appeared- "EZ-BIOS: initializing" and I knew that it was Maxtor's program since I had no OS yet. Then I installed Windows 98 SE by using the startup disk for my Windows 98 SE, but when all my installation was finished, i still saw the same "EZ-BIOS" thing and when in windows, some drives were loaded with DOS-support because of this. I can't seem to find out why this is so, but i'm guessing that it had something to do with the CMOS BIOS numbers. Any explanations or solutions will aid me.

Your problem lies with the fact that you enabled EZ-Bios for your hard drive. This is not necessary. Your hard drive does not need a soft Bios. This is unrelated to anything in your computer's Bios.

Your solution is this, boot up with the MaxBlast floppy that came with your drive. Go back into advanced options, choose EZ-Bios and disable it, or uninstall it. The exact terminology may be remove. Reboot your machine.

Everything should be fine now. Let me know your results.

Thank you for your reply RBogan.

To be a little more clear, are you saying that I should start MaxBlast floppy and disable it before I partition and format the HD? And then install my OS?

EZ bios should allow a computer which doesn't recognize a 30 gig HD as one partition to do so. If your computer will recognize and support a 30 gig then by all means disable ez bios otherwise you are better off keeping it.
