Help! I am trying to update a driver for my cd-rom, however, I keep getting the message mscdex.exe not found. I have now downloaded this and I am unsure of where it should be for it to work. Also in DOS, it does not recognise my d drive?

Put your CD driver floppy in. In DOS with the A:/ prompt just type INSTALL. Then follow the instructions. At some point it will ask you for the MSCDEX floppy. Stick this in and continue to follow on screen instructions. When finished I find it best to re-boot. Sometimes the D drive is'nt recognized until you do

Take a look at the line for PATH in your autoexec.bat file. It should either have something like:
PATH=c:\dos;
if you use DOS
or with
PATH=c:\windows\command;
if you use DOS from windows, and make sure that there is no 'REM' or 'rem' leading the PATH line.

In Windows 98/95, you don't need anything in autoexec.bat or config.sys.
You can add the line in dosstart.bat but it's better adding DOS commands into Exit To Dos.pif in the Windows directory. There are options here for autoexec.bat and config.sys. Go to c:\windows, right-click on Exit To Dos.pif, choose Properties, click the Program tab,click the Advanced button, check MS-DOS mode and specify a new MS-DOS configuration.
Here's a sample for autoexec.bat
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD000
Here's a sample for Config.sys
Device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD000

You can use the generic oakcdrom.sys from the Win98 boot disk. Just copy it to c:\windows\command and you can use the above exactlty as it stands.
