My Win98se box has finally crossed into the realm of instability. If I attempt to install any software - drivers, games, utilities, whatever - upon reboot a registry checker window pops up and exclaims that there are errors in the registry. Upon clicking "OK", it forces a reboot and when rebooting the registry checker comes into play replacing the latest registry with an older saved "good" copy.
I've installed McAfee utilities to attempt to remedy any registry problems. But if I reboot - bye-bye to the changes and bye-bye to the system having any understanding of what this McAfee is and why it's on the desktop!
Any suggestions? I have the win98se upgrade cd. When I get my hands on a win98 full cd should I wipe the slate clean?

I would agree it is time to do a 'cleanup' If you have a copy of an older ver of Windows you can use the 'upgrade' ver to do a 'full' install. During install, the upgrade will ask for an older ver to verify the upgrade.. pop the old ver into the CD and it will finish installing.
sometimes making a text file in the c:\ directory containing "rem" or something else (so the file is not empty)and call it "NTLDR" Use the switch /c:\NTLDR to run Setup eg: setup /c:\ntldr hope this helps

Chappie,
I figured as much. Thanks for reaffirming my course of action.
What is the purpose of the text file by the way when running setup?
