While holding down delete when restarting, the computer won't go into the bios. I'm trying to fix my g/f dad's computer and need my usb cable modem to be recognized, but when I connect the modem, it is looking for an unknown device. I figure that the bios isn't configured to accept the usb device. Any ideas?
Thanks!

The key command to enter bios setup varies with different manufacturers. Other keys used include F1, F2, esc, F10, ctrl-alt-esc, ctrl-alt-del. Sometimes, holding any key will produce a keyboard error, with the instructions for entering setup displayed.

Dave,
Right, this is a compaq presario 1670, (an old mutha) laptop. I have tried to create a keyboard error, however it just slows down on booting up and eventually will boot to windows. This is starting to anger me. I downloaded the guides for this particular computer from compaq, but there isn't anything at all about how to get into the bios.

Hi Mac, Dave, hi everyone,
CompaQ's BiosSetupKey is F10!
You have to know that CompaQ comps have special features for Bios setup!
There's a tiny partition that is used for Bios setup! if, thinking it's just lost space, people sometimes delete that partition, the setup won't then be performed! :-(
(some other makes have a similar setup partition)
In such a case, you have to access CompaQ's website to get a utility!HTH

Hi Mac, Dave, hi everyone,
We were speaking about a similar subject in that thread
-> Compaq recoveryTerri is very, very knowledgeable on the subject of CompaQ recovery... I remember a thread about 10 months ago... wow! impressive!

Hi everyone,
I would like to provide everyone with a good webpage I found on the subject
-> How to access the computer setup (BIOS) on many brand name computersHTH

Thanks for the replies everyone! I was able to get into the bios, but wasn't able to find any information on USB there. Everytime I plug the laptop in, it still looks for an unknown device. I suppose my next move is to upgrade the bios? I have never performed this task before and would like a couple of pointers.
Thanks for the help!

Upgrading the bios isn't difficult but follow instructions closely. Download the file from the Compaq web site (called RomPaq). Run the executable file to create a bootable floppy disc. This can be done on any computer. Then boot up the laptop with the floppy. There was no mention of any changes in the bios that affect the USB. You should check the current bios version, you may already have the latest.
Did you install the cable modem software before connecting the modem to the laptop? This is the normal procedure. Do any other USB devices work? HTH

Dave,
Thanks for the reply. When they came to install about two months ago, they didn't leave her a disk for the modem. I was able to download the appropriate files for my laptop, which is a new vaio, and everything worked. When I copied the files over to her fathers laptop, and ran the new hardware wizard, it told me that there was no information for that particular device. I guess I'll try the rompaq and see if that will give me a usb option in the bios.

Is the operating system Win98FE or Win98SE?
My own cable modem instructions specifically state that Win98FE will not work.

Dave,
What type do you have? My gf computer has 98SE and it works fine. She has an RCA DCM235 modem. Well I think I'm going to give up as we are heading to their place in FL for two weeks. Thanks to everyone for their help!
Mac

Toshiba model PCX2200 connected to PC through network card. It's supposed to be faster than USB. Also, no modem drivers to install.
