I'm sending this message for a friend on the phone cause she screwed up her system. She just formatted her HD and wants to install 98. The start up disk is working, but she can't get it to read the floppy. She typed e then enter then setup then enter and it did not work. Any suggestions?

If she hits e and enter and it changes drives, than it is recognizing the drive. what files and folders does she see on the e drive, what error message is she getting when she typed in setup.exe, and does she have more than 1 hard drive? If more than 1 hard drive, try f:

Just a hint:If you have, lets say,an HD with two partitions(C: & D:),and you boot from Win98 bootdisk, it also loads MS Ramdrive in E:,which pushes the CD Rom one letter ahead.

The real mode drivers on the start up disk are for atapi or scsi cd rom drives. They are not guaranteed to work with all drives. She may need to download the drivers for the specific cd rom drives (dos drivers) she has.

Not knowing her hard drive setup i don't know which letter would be assigned to which drive. I would go through changing to each drive letter d - g look at the directory for each (dir/p) before downloading the specific drivers. Did she take the computer apart at any point? add any hardware? if so check the drives connections and jumpers. Why did she need to format the drive? any problems before?

she reformatted because she was getting alot of errors and computer kept shutting down. windows millenium is working. she doesn't want to use it, but it reads it ok. the 98 disk was fine before. she had used it not too long ago, but now it won't work. Thank you for all your help.

Checking for valid drives at each letter is a great idea but be sure to use d: e: f: etc. then at each drive use the command DIR/p/o/a

This will give an aphabetical list of ALL files and directories, page by page.
What ever Drive letter winds up and shows content of the CD should have a win98 directory. cd to that directory and try the setup command.

Was just playing around with an old Compaq and it would assign drive R: as the Cd-Rom.

It seems that you answered your own question. If her WinME disk works fine, then the hardware is OK, and so if her Win98 disk does't work, then it is probably because the disk if faulty...

You might be be able to get away with giving it a wipe...

Hi ya

it might be easier to open the case and take off the ribbon cable to the cdr and have just the cd rom on .
then install 98se onto your harddisk prob C:\
when that has installed then shut down the computer reconnect the cdr and turn on. windows should then detect cdr and either install the software or ask for the disk.

I had the same thing happen to me. so I ran FDISK of the win98 startup disk and partitioned my c:\ into to drives, c:\ and d:\.

if you would like instructions on how to do this then email me.

regards

pigsey
