I am on another computer typing this post because I can't get past my homepage to get to the web. I have a laptop that is wireless to the Internet. For some reason everytime I type in a web address I end up back on the homepage--which happens to be RoadRunner. I even went to Internet Options to change the homepage address to something else and it still goes to RoadRunner. Could I have a virus? Can anyone help me?? Thanks!

Hi djtoby44, hi everyone,

Your problem is very exciting! I never saw that!
When you type an address, you always go to the same page!
I saw Forged HomePages but never impossibility to go to another page!

I don't know how to solve the problem but wait for other posters or try these clues:
- Download, install and run HiJackThis 1.95
- Read Forged IE HomePage

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France

Thanks Gerard from Paris---but I can't get to the website to download it....can I download it on this computer and then make a data copy of the information and install in on the computer that is giving me problems??? On that computer I can't go anywhere besides the homepage for ROAD RUNNER. Any other suggestions are much appreciated.

If you save a "download file" to a specified folder there should never be any problem importing it to another machine. As long as you don't run it then it won't be activated on the other machine.

Size could be the only constraint (I've not checked). Fine if it goes on a floppy, and there are file splitting programs available if it's too big. Burning a CD is another option.

First go to Start, Programs, Startup to make sure there is nothing in there that ends with .hta. If there is then right click and delete it. Then...

Try going to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options (with IE closed of course).

Change your homepage to blank or http://www.google.com/ to see if you can then get to anywhere else.

Locate the Menu Bar which is usually at the top of your Internet Explorer window. The Menu Bar will say [File], [Edit], [View], [Favorites], [Tools], and [Help].
Click [Tools]
Click [Internet Options...]
Locate where it says: [Home page].
You will notice where it says: [You can change which page you can use for your home page.]
Locate where it says: [Address:]
Delete whatever has been typed in the white box.
Type the address for whatever webpage you want to use for your homepage.

Thanks everyone, but I've tried all of the mentioned ideas. NOthing seems to work. I changed the homepage address to google---it goes to RoadRunner...in the address bar it says
http://www.google.com/v5/home/01793.157.00.htmll--But it is the RoadRunner homepage...and it's a current page...it has the current weather, current news...etc. I just did a virus scan...nothing popped up...but perhaps the virus list is not up to date.
So, I've changed homepage...did the hijack thing...but really don't know what to delete, did a virus scan, reset modem...and I still can't get past the homepage. I guess I'll have to reload everything to it's original settings...ugh..that does not make me happy. Thanks everyone. If anyone else has any ideas...I'm all ears.

Hi djtoby44, hi everyone,

You don't speak about the second clue I gave in Response #1. You maybe forgot so I put it again below.
It comes from our forum Computing.Net - Ws9x-#114626
Eddie May 31, 2002 at 10:32:28 Pacific
Subject: ISP Home Page
How do I stop my browser (IE 5.5) always opening at my ISP`s home page? I`ve tried "Tools" "Options" "Use Current", all to no avail. My ISP`s home page takes a long time to load. Eddie

Correct your home page to the one you prefer, then immediately do the following:
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Right-click on the Internet Explorer key, choose new>Key, name it Control Panel.
Right-click on the Control Panel, choose new>DWORD value, name it Homepage.
Right-click on Homepage, choose modify and type in the number 1.
This should lock your home page, so no other web site can change it.
Then navigate here and verify the homepage is correct:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
look for the Start Page entry.

Hi Gerard--and others,
I tried going into the registry--I followed the directions once again...didn't work. This stinks. I am now going to go to Best Buy and see if someone up there can help...if not---I guess I'll lose everything and do a clean wipe of the drive.
Anymore suggestions...will be much appreciated.
Thanks again!

Hi djtoby44, hi everyone,

I don't know well about Win-ME (just know there's some disturbing possibility of CheckPoint that everyone tries to get rid of)... Nobody suggested to restore an old version of the Registry (with Ws98, you can go back till 5 days ago)... isn't it possible? if the call for the malware is in Registry and problem appeared recently, then it should work!

>I appreciate your help!
You're welcome djtoby44! I'm on Computing.Net to give a hand... ;-)

>I guess I'll lose everything and do a clean
>wipe of the drive.
Why "clean wipe"? that early? don't give up yet!
We'll find!

Hi Again,
Well, I guess I forgot I have Windows 98 on the laptop. I don't know...is there a way to go back? I thought that was only possible with Windows ME. I won't wipe clean until I have exhausted all possibilities. Thanks again Gérard from Paris, France!
Keep sending ideas!!!

Hi djtoby44, hi everyone,

>is there a way to go back?
Ws98SE? sure, there's a way to goback... you've possible 5 backups (5 days)!
- Boot in Dos mode (press [F8] every 3 seconds at bootup till you get the Startup menu and choose MS-Dos line only)
- type down
CD \
SCANREG /RESTORE
You will be asked which backup you need, choose a date before your issue
- let the program do its job

Agree scanreg /restore is an option but I want to make sure that the "go back" aspect is properly understood for the future.

What it does is simply replace the registry plus a couple of other important files (system.ini and win.ini). It doesn't touch any other files on the system. If files have arrived due to a install which took place after the registry you are restoring they are likely to be ignored. The possible need for re-installation of the odd program is not therefore precluded.

I realise you know all this Gérard but I was unsure if djtoby44 did.

Using scanreg /fix instead simply rebuilds and repairs your "current" registry. Usually my first option of the two but I doubt it would help in this instance.

HI everyone again,

djtoby44, Have you tried an IE repair yet?

Go to Start,Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Click on Remove button and you will/should receive a popup offering the option to Repair.

You can also try going to IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security and click the button to set "Default Level"

While you are there is the button under 'Internet Zone', "Sites" button showing as active or is it greyed out? If active is the RR page the only site listed?

Just kicking around more ideas.

Bryan

Hi everyone again,
I tried Bryan's suggestion...no luck. I asked a tech at Best Buy and he suggested I download ad aware---then put it on a CD and put it on the computer that I am having a problem with. I think I will try that. I'll let you know what happens. Any other ideas...keep them coming!
Thanks!

IT'S FIXED! I uninstalled IE6 and had my laptop restored to earlier version IE5.5
and now---it works! I can get to the Internet now without staying on the same homepage! I was about to make a data CD of ad aware when I thought I would try this last thought of getting rid of
IE6! Thanks for everyone's help and support! I'm so glad I didn't give up and wipe the computer clean!
Thanks!!!

Hi djtoby44, hi everyone,

Congratulations djtoby44! ;-)
I'm very glad you managed to fix that problem!

I'm angry at me! I very often suggest to just change the version of IE (downgrade or upgrade, just to get IE to reinstall)... I suggest that for little troubles and I judged yours was serious!
Finally, basic solutions must not be ignored!

Have a good day,

Hi djtoby44, hi everyone,

I can't believe it!

So, was it only another bug of IE6? a browser not being able to lead to a second link... only the Start page!?!?
;-)

Must we uninstall IE6?

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France
