My friends did something to her computer (a file..I suppose) that still allows her e-mail thru AOL but she can't get on the internet proper. Any suggestions as to files, registry, etc? to fix

Reinstall AOL, if it still doesn't work, call for tech support.

The reason you will be having data flow problems, is due to the network adapter that AOL places in the Network properties. I would suggest, goto control panel, network remove any reference to AOL, there should only be - Client For Microsoft Networks. - Dial up Adapter - tcp / ip
Anything else, unless you have a home network or other wise, You will need to speak with you network administrator.
If this fails there is a communications error and you will need to E-mail me again and I will show you how to do that.
