I have a Proteva CMP-5019C 500 Mhz Win98 with a 20Gbyte HD. I have developed a strange problem whereas I can't get into some Internet sites. I know these sites are active as I can get into them on a friends computer. I am on the Road Runner system which I know isn't at fault. It's something strange with my computer. I have tried many things including uninstalling IE6 which I was running and going back to IE5.5. All my settings seem normal. I must confess that I did use a proxy server for a short while and finally uninstalled it. It was called Netsetter and now called Marketscore. I uninstalled it as I couldn't see any improvement. The computer seems relatively normal for general use, but it's the network thing with the Internet that has me confused. I have a hunch there is a file in there that has to be changed or cleared out, but I don't know which one. Anyone ever run across this weird problem ? Another thing is it tells me I don't have enough system memory when trying to run Defrag in Windows. I have 256 Megs of ram. I shut down all unncessary software but it still gives me the same message. I understand that to be a problem with cluster size. Mine is 4096. Scan disk told me the same thing, but I managed to run that by booting up in dos and running Scandisk from there. Any thoughts ?

Best guess? Check you content advisor in Internet Explorer and see if they are any zones or content being blocked.

Run a search for files or folders named HOSTS. Delete all entries in those files that follow the examples.

Try cleaning out temp inet files, history, cookies, and downloaded program files (activeX controls)... and look for a file called HOSTS (not hosts.sam... just hosts.). If found rename it.
To really clean out the temp inet files, etc... do it from DOS. This will recreate the index.dat files and may help. To do this:
Reboot into DOS.
Browse to c:\windows by typing:
cd windows
Then type:
deltree tempor~1
deltree history
deltree cookies
deltree downlo~1Reboot into windows and look for HOSTS... rename if found.
Try those websites again.

Are you trying to get to these sites using a bookmark that may have the proxy in it. Try accessing the sites by typing the address in the address bar and then change your bookmarks or enter through a google search if the above does not help.
