can't get dma to stay checked for cd rom

i just bought a creative labs 48x cd rom the manual says to enable dma,but i'll check the box,then restart my computer,and the box will be un checked again.any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks,Chad

Do you have a soundcard with DOS drivers installed? I had the same problem with a Soundblaster Live Card. I have disabled the SB16 emulation hardware and there came 2 dma channels free (1 and 5). I checked the box for CD-ROM player and whoala, it works finally works.
