Hello I'm back again,
I have been getting help from Wooofff and EchoLi with reference to my can't find server problem. Using ping with my isp, google, yahoo and computing.net, I get request timed out on my new and old computers. I see in my internet connections, it shows the following address-http://proxycfg.netsetter.com/gencfd-. I don't know what this address is and I was wondering if spyware, adware or whatever dumped this in my computer or this is a correct address. Something is blocking the communication between my computer and my isp, my machine is very sluggish, freezes up for one to four minutes and has this can't find server thrown in. I scanned for a virus and trojans, both machines are clean. There was alot of adware that adaware did not erase, thank to Wooofff, I found another program to scan for this spam. I am at a loss to figure out what could be causing this communications problem, hopefully, i can get more input from the great people of this website, thanking you again,
charlie

Can you ping any of your other computers on your local network without any timeout issues?

Look at the following link for some info on the URL you mentioned earlier:

Do have netsetter set up a a proxy server on your system? Try removing it if so and check your ping responses.

1.b) If you are not using Dial-up.

You have an 'automatic configuration script' setting pointing at the domain 'netsetter.com'!!!!! Bad News!!!
Netsetter is Foistware/Spyware, an unwanted application program that comes along, trojan-style, with completely unrelated software. Usually because some jerk is getting paid to foist it on your system whether you want it or not. Since they tag along with so many different pieces of third-party software, it is not uncommon to get re-infected with these foistware products again and again.

To remove Netsetter In IE:
* Click on the Tools Menu.
* From the dropdown menu, Click on Internet Options
* The Internet Options dialog box will appear.
* In the dialog box, click on the "Connections" tab at the top.

Further checkup to insure the use of Netsetter
(http://proxycfg.netsetter.com/gencfd) proxy serveris disabled:
In IE, look under: Tools>Internet Options. Go to: Connections and under each connection listed, look under: Settings. If you see: Use Proxy Server checked, uncheck it. And/or if you see: Use Automatic Configuration Script checked, and see Netsetter in the address, uncheck that also.

I was impressed by "Blue Front"'s knowledge and one day, I have a question to ask about some of the settings in IE6/OE6, re. Connection/Settings etc.

Will come back to this later.

charlie, charlie, charlie...

Have you been trying to download a web accelerator and got zapped with Netsetter???
Bad....

Look for a possible entry in Startup: NSCheck"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\NSCHECK.exe /

That is NetSetter, also known as Marketscore. Get rid of it.

There is a utility called PestPatrol, known for being able to remove Netsetter Adware/Spyware. Check it out at:
http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/alpha_index.asp

Also, Spybot may be able to do the job.

There may also be other issues.
Post back if you need help.

Hi Wooofff,
have been playing with the modem setups as I was getting a new error (prm2). The computer still freezes on websites and especially on this site. I downloaded information on prm2 errors that walked me through a number of procedures which proved fruitless. I put back the settings and tried a number of entry telephone numbers, i finally got one that worked only after I connected with the isp, got the familar notice can't find server, I clicked to computing.net, and here I am. Glad I could get this far and hope this net problem is corrected shortly,
thanking you and the rest of the computing.net helpful techies, for providing me with information, hopefully, I will have an answer to this connection problem shortly,
charlie
