If you you are using Outlook Express, try deleting the inbox file. It's inbox.dbx if you are using OE 5 or 6. It will be recreated on the next OE startup.

If you delete the inbox you will get a nice new one which I think will be empty.
First make a folder called KEEP, then move any emails you want preserved into it. You can highlight the whole block of emails by highlighting one then pressing Ctrl-A key. You can move them back the same way afterwards.

It would help if you would say what email client you're using...version...when you noticed the problem, etc...etc

Thanks Derek, I should have warned about that. I move everything out of my inbox and tend to assume that everyone does.
Zeta, it's more efficient to create other folders for your messages. I create one for each person I communicate with, plus miscellaneous others.

Yes, no need to format the drive (!), just delete the inbox, exit the program and restart it.
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

Always best to start a new thread of your own. That way we know what OS you are using and can deal with your specific variant of the problem.
Assuming you've backed up your Inbox emails, what do you mean when you say "I can't even delete the inbox file"?
When you go to Windows Explorer (or My Computer) and Find the file Inbox.dbx you presumably try to delete it. What exactly happens then - is there some sort of error message or does it just ignore you?
