Can't defrag hard drive

Comment:
My computer contains a Pentium III 600MHz Coppermine processor on a Asus P3V 4X motherboard, 128 MB RAM, and a 13Gig Maxtor Hard Drive. I'm running Windows 98, 1st Edition.
Everything about the computer runs fine, but I can't defrag the hard drive. When I choose to defrag C:, the computer immediately freezes, and I have to reboot.
Does someone know what I can do to fix this problem? Do I need to re-install Windows? Or is it a problem in the registry?
I welcome all comments about what I should try. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thx.

No need to reinstall the OS. Hit Alt/CTRL/Del and close everything that is running EXCEPT systray and Explorer. Do a thorough scan disk first, then defrag the hard drive. Reboot and you should be fine.

I'm not sure the following will solve your problem (i've consulted the ms kb above), however the disk defragmenter that came with win 98 is deeply flawed. Consider the many posts at this site concerning this problem.
To resolve, go to www.surecool.com and dl the windows millenium disk defrag utility. Rename your present defrag.exe defrag.old and replace it with Win ME defrag.exe.
If probleme does not resolve itself, then follow the advice at the link provided by WhiPhil above.

you can also boot into safe mode and defrag from there ,heard this on techtv "call for help" tonight. hit f5 when it says starting windows98 or f8 and choose safemode from list.
Summary: It could be Monkey B virus. One characteristic is you can't see hard drive when boot from floppy. Run a virus scan. To kill you will probably need F-PROT....
Summary: recently my saystem won't defrag. I'm running WIN98 and using it's defrag program. If I run maintenence wizard the SCANDISC will run to about 3/4 of the way then just keep repeating, and if I go right...
Summary: First thing I would check are the IDE and power cables. Make sure they are securly connected to the drives and motherboard. I know it sounds like the simple thing but you might have pulled out a cab...
