I would like to create a few folders and shortcuts on my desktop. Usually I'd be able to right click on the desktop and make a new folder, but "new" is missing from the right-click menu. It was there a few days ago. All I've done with the computer since then was install Opera and view a few websites. How can I get that menu back?

The 98 fix for that should be here: http://aumha.org/regfiles.php#gui
Scroll down to 'Restore New Command' and click on it. (In the description there's a 'Win-XP safe' link which apparently means if you run the fix on an XP machine it won't damage anything but also may not fix it.)
Extract the file and follow the instructions to install it.
That missing NEW option on the desktop is associated with Internet Explorer so it's possible the Opera install is what caused the problem in the first place. If the fix doesn't work you may need to uninstall Opera and go with something else.
It's also possible to restore a registry from before the problem started but that would leave Opera non-functional since it wouldn't be in the registry and reinstalling it may just cause the problem again. So don't try that--at least not yet. Let's see how the fix works.
What version of Opera did you install? The later ones are not suitable for W98 - I can give you the latest version number if needed.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
DAVE, thanks for the link. I'll try that tomorrow after work and let you know how it goes. Derek, I installed Opera 10.63.
Sorry, you had obviously done your homework LOL. Opera 10.6.3 is spot on for W98.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
That registry fix worked like a charm. Didn't even need to reboot it.
Thanks a million!
You're welcome. I'm glad it worked out.
That's good news - thx for letting us know. Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
