Using Windows 98 I am trying to connect to the internet through AOL. I can connect to AOL fine but when trying to go out to the internet the progress bar goes to about 29% and stalls. It does the same with IE5.5. I have deleted and re-installed AOL 7.0, EI5.5, all adapters. HELP!!!!

try delete and reinstall of Dial Up Networking.
Control Panel - add/remove programs - windows setup - communications. you may need your windows disk

Didn't work. For some reason, when dialing up, it drops connection on the first two dial outs and always connects on try number 3. All three are using the same number. Do you thing modem????

Sounds more like traffic to the server you are dialing up to or sound noise via phone line does not allow enough bytes for the connection to handshake. Have the phone company do a line test to rule that out and try switching numbers to dial out to.
You might want to try to increase modem speed, by going to the start, settings, control panel, click on modem, properties and increase to max I belive 115000kbs.

I switched lines and it did connect on the first try. However, I still have the origional problem that I can't get to the internet. STILL SEEKING HELP!

you could try removing the aol adapter, to do this click on start, programs, aol system info, then click on utilities and click on uninstall aol adapter, then close. then reboot and sign onto aol again and the files for the adapter should get replaced by aol itself. also you could do as well is start find, look for files in your pc called 'global.org' there will be two of them, just delete them this is safe to do as done it a few times now myself.
try both of these and see how you get on.
hope this helps you..
billy..

check your resources! AOL7 requires at least 70%
restart you box then right click my computer. in the box that opens up click on properties and you will see the resources available. if on a reboot you have less than 85% you need to do a tune up on your box.

I get the same thing I contacted aol and they suggested updating my video and modem drivers. It appears this is only associated with version 7.0. Could anybody give me any other suggestions or solutions?

hey ive had the exact same problem as you. ive tried everything that youve probably been told to do and it does not work as you probably already know, however i found some interesting information. it only does this for me when i have winsock2 installed, when uninstalled everything is fine. i heard this was caused because aol accounts are 16 bit and winsock2 is 32 bit or something like that. i wonder if theres a way to get a 16 bit winsock?
