Can't complete dial up

I am part of a group who try to help local elderly people to use their computers. I am trying to connect a 486 / Windows 95B to the Internet so that the owner can use email. This is something I have done dozens of times without a problem. The connection proceeded normally to ‘verifying user name and password’ then hung and threw Error 650 - “The computer you’re dialling into does not respond to a network request. Check your server type setting in the properties of the connection. If this problem persists, check with your system administrator.” All the settings are definitely correct, I have checked and rechecked. I tried updating DUN to v1.3 - Result - now throws a variety of error messages depending on which ISP is dialled into. These include 629, 645 and 650. The actual wording of one message is “Dial-up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the Server Type settings. Check your network configuration in the Control Panel then try the connection again”. I have removed DUN and reinstalled it, retried - same result. I have also tried searching for help on the error messages (74,000 results for just Error 629) but they all suggest the procedures I have already taken. If anyone can genuinely suggest anything else from personal experience it will save me from going mad. Thanks.

Have you called your internet service provider to see if they're having some sort of trouble on their end? I've had that happen to me where I thought the problem was mine and made all sorts of changes only to discover by calling, that they were having a problem. If they're not, then they could walk you through the set up.

Sounds like your DUN is currupt. First uninstall dun1.3 Then rip out dial up networking and TCP/IP. Reboot and re-install. That should clear up the problem.
NOTE : Make sure you have your win95 cd or the .cab files handy.
