Can't click on desktop icons & start-up problem

i have windows 98 and recently upgraded to aol 6,0 which is causing me alot of problems but the 2 that I am concerned about the most is I just went to turn on my computer and it would not go on...i got a black screen and in the upper left hand corner it was just flashing and below that it said
Atapi ide cd-rom device driver version vi-23b 1 drive (s) detected unit 1, slave, IRQ,IS, I/O address 0x0170
I had to shut the main power off and then when the computer did start I clicked on the aol icon on the desktop as i always have and it opened the properties box instead of the aol sign on screen...i also left clicked on my computer and it also opened the properties box where I have always had to right click to get that before....any suggestions wil be most appreciated...Thank You...

I would restore a previous registry before aol was installed. from dos: scanreg /restore

Thanks KJ but how do I do that? Do I go to Start and then Run and type in dos:scanreg/restore????

No, you need to click start, shutdown, and re-start in ms-dos mode. at the dos prompt type c:\scanreg /restore then pick a previous registry date.
