Probably an indicator that the CMOS battery is dead.

I suppose SCU is an acronym for 'setup CMOS utility'.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

CMOS - complementary metal oxide semiconductor.

Your bios has two parts - most of the code you don't see in the bios Setup other than what you see on the screens and is stored on a part of the chip you can't change the contents of, at least not without flashing the bios to a different version - the part where user settings are stored including the time and date that are other than defaults is the CMOS part of the bios chip. A working mboard battery is required to retain any user settings in the CMOS, so that those settings are not lost even if the computer is without power otherwise. When you move a jumper on your mboard to clear the cmos, or if the mboard battery is dead or missing or has poor connections, at the very least your time and date go to defaults, and you will get a "Cmos Checksum Error..." or similar every time you boot.

So - if the time and date in your bios Setup is wrong, and if you have not done anything such as flash your bios or move a jumper on your mboard to clear the cmos, your mboard battery is either dead, upside down so it's polarity is backwards, or the contacts that touch the battery are not making good contact.
Mboard batteries will usually last 5 years or so - if the battery in this computer has never been changed, it's lasted longer than average.
These batteries are commonly available where computers or computer parts are sold, or where a greater variety of batteries are sold. Pay attention to the battery's polarity - look at it before you remove it - usually + is up.

Hi, If you have a Volt meter check the battery. It should be 3 volts if great and could still work down to about 2 volts. Radio shack has the CR2032 battery for about $3.50. A good battery lasts for approximately 5 to 8 years or more.

Good Luck, Jim

I had this problem just a few months ago with an old AST Bravo. I don't think that YOU can change the battery, because it is a laptop, but some computer/laptop dealership (Future Shop, BestBuy) can probably change it for you.

In that case, this is probably the battery you need:

If you have a manual it may tell you where it is. It may be called a cmos battery or RTC battery or similar. If you don't have a manual, generally it sometimes is accessed by removing the keyboard, sometimes it is under a cover on the case, sometimes it is inside the case otherwise.

Also considering that the laptop is from 1999, you MOST LIKELY got a battery issue. Try checking under the keyboard, or on the back of the unit. If there is a cover on the backside of the laptop, beside it there should be a sentance telling you what is behind the cover. If you can't find it or the manual doesn't tell you where it is located, go to a computer shop and get it changed.
