Hi Everyone,
Please help. I am trying to boot to the win98 program on my laptop. When I turn it on the IBM window comes up then the windows 98 window then I get this:

This driver is provided by OAK TECHNOLOGY, Inc...
OTI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM device driver, Rev D91XV352
(C) Copyright oak technology Inc. 1987-1997
Device Name :MSCD001
Transfer Mode :Programmed I/O
Number of Drives :1

MSCDEX Version 2.25

Drive D: = Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0

C:\>

What do I type after the c prompt? I typed Win but it keeps saying bad command or file name
I also tried the different solutions from the messages I read here on this site, but to no avail.
What else can I do?
Will reinstalling the win98 OS work?
If so how do I reinstall it, because I tried and couldn't do it.

I have an IBM X24 laptop. I bought it used and never gotten to the desktop.

Any help would be very appreciated.
Thank you

Hi ky, hi everyone

Since you bought this laptop second hand and never got to the desktop, I assume you haven't yet installed any programs on it either nor have created any documents on it.

But before we get excited and start from scratch, I would like you to type in:
dir C: /w /o[Enter]key.
What does that return?

Hi and thank you responding.

I typed it in and it returned: Bad command or file name.

Does this mean that I don't have win98 installed on this laptop?

You've likely got a machine with a freshly formatted drive (probably from using a bootable Win98 floppy). It most likely only has Command.com and the CD-Rom drivers (so you can re-install Win98 from CD)...

Kinda like the count asked, what do you get when you type this (from the "C>" prompt)?:

dir *.* [Enter]

Hi
I typed dir*.*
I got the message: Bad command or file name.

then I typed dir

and this showed up: Volume in drive C has no label
Volume Serial Number is 1764-1106
Directory of C:\ and it displays all the files there and then returned to c prompt below it. lol

How do I reinstall windows?

Thank you for your help.

"I typed dir*.*

"

Well, sure - you didn't leave a 'space' - regardless, there's no real reason to use the command that way, just plain 'dir' does the job

"How do I reinstall windows?"

You'll need a Windows 98 installation CD, unless by some slim chance the installation files are on the hard drive

Type dir/p/o:n and enter from the c:\> prompt. (The problems with your previous usage of the DIR command are because you didn't use spaces properly.) Do you see a Windows listed there followed by a <dir>? If so there's a windows directory there and the situation may be repairable. If there's no windows directory you have no choice but to reinstall with a 98 Cd.

Of course, since this computer is new to you it may be a good idea to do a new installation anyway.

Just to clarify, the boot floppy doesn't contain Windows (that's at least 120M - floppy only holds 1.38M). Floppy is used in the process of installing W98 from a CD.

Re #3. Booting with the floppy will not format the drive unless you type the appropriate command - so it shouldn't have messed anything up.

Thank you jboy and Dave.

Dave I typed it in and got the dir. There is no windows OS listed. I tried to install the windows software but nothing.

I'm sorry but I'm clueless.

What do I type after the c prompt to begin installation of windows? I have the win 98 installation cd.

Thank you very much

If you actually have the Windows installation CD and Product Key, you just need to run the Setup from the CD

Hi ky, T-R-A, jboy, DAVEINCAPS

Ever since the old days, when there still wasn't the Windows Graphical User Interface to "simplify" the operation of Personal Computers, there is and one used to use internal and external DOS commands. And those DOS commands were, and sometimes still are, to be typed in exactly in the right format using spaces and (forward)slashes.
Type in a command in the wrong format and DOS "kindly" replies with:
Bad command or file name

C:\>_

What we all are saying is that if you don't type in dir /w /o[Enter]key or dir *.*[Enter]key or just plain dir[Enter]key exactly in the right format, as shown, DOS will refuse to cooperate returning the error message:
Bad command or file name

C:\>_

By the above I didn't intend to be rude or offensive, I was just trying to explain why you got that particular error message.

You wrote in your OP that you tried to reinstall, how did you try to do that?
By means of a Windows 98 CD-ROM? You will need one as mentioned by jboy with the Product key code.
And like DAVEINCAPS mentioned; "since the computer is new to you...", and apparently you haven't yet get any further as the C: prompt, "it may be... ...new installation anyway".

Hopefully, Partition and Format a Hard Drive, will get you going.

Hi ky, T-R-A, jboy, DAVEINCAPS, Derek, hi everyone

Okay, reading the other posts entered while I was typing the above reply (#10), you may just as well ignore the main part of my reply above. ;-)

At the C: prompt type in:
D:[Enter]key and at the than shown D: prompt type in:
setup[Enter]key.

Enjoy the ride. :-)

The problem could be that the IBM Thinkpad X24 never came with Win98. With a 1.13 GHz processor, it's almost certainly an XP machine (Lenovo lists as XP Pro/Win2000) and Win98 will not have appropriate device drivers available.

Contact IBM (now LENOVO)to see if the original CD/CD's are still available, or talk to the seller about original Software.

Did you know that you did not even have to install Win98 first?

Nonetheless, enjoy.
