It started with a virus which infected my boot sector and my partition sector (WYX). I couldnt get anything to take it off both. I tried a program which erased the virus and (joy!) my boot and partition sectors with it. SO.. the message came up "I/O Error" when I tried to boot.
After trying everything i could think of, (the while not being able to access C drive at all), i deleted the primary partition, and recreated it. F-Disk said "You must format your hard drive AFTER it boots". SO.. i reboot, msg "Non-system disk or error". So I booted off of a boot disk and typed "format c: /s".. a wonderful msg popped up saying "Invalid Media Type".
I then typed "c:\" and switched over to the C partition. Then I typed "dir" and got "Invalid Media Type".
Can I just say Im about to cry? I've tried everything I can for the past week and am at the end of my rope. Help?!

Sounds strange, what boot disk are you using? Does it have a valid verson of FORMAT.COM? (eg if you have a large hard drive, and are using FDISK with large drive support, are you using FORMAT from the same disk?)

Hi Everybody !
>-- Solution to remove WYX virus fom an infected computer. --
I also had same boot sector virus in my computer memory and I tried mcafee antivirus kit but was not able to remove it, after some few here and there I was able to remove this virus.
Before i tell u the procedure for removing this virus you must first know that these virus only spread thru an floppy to an computer while it boots
.
Procedure to remove the virus :- (It is very very simple to follow)
1) Find a computer Wind 98, or 95 which is clean from all types of viruses.
2) Format a floppy by right clicking on a: in explorer and choose format and then on "full" option to format it and then format the floppy.
3)Go to the Dos prompt c:\>
4)type as given below at c:\>
sys a:
for example : c:\> sys a: press enter button
5)It will copy few files into ur floppy but these files won't be seen except COMMAND.COM file.

6) On net go the site
"www.vet.com.au/html/zoo/descriptions " and look in for wyx virus description and click on it. If needed read the descriptive file and download the wyxfix.zip file. This file will get download within 5 seconds.
7) Unzip the file, it will show 2 files in it
a)Cwsdpmi.exe b)WYX_fix.exe
8)Copy these both files into the same floppy.
9)Floppy must contain these files :-
a)Cwsdpmi.exe b)WYX_fix.exe c)COMMAND.COM
10)Write protect the Floppy
11)V.V.Imp Write protect the floppy
12)Now your bootable floppy is done.
13)Shutdown your infected computer fully.
14) Insert the floppy into floppy drive and start the computer
15) It will show you some configuration settings no need to worry about that then it will go to a:
16) At a:\> type wyx_fix.exe
for example:- a:\> wyx_fix.exe
This will permanently remove the wyx virus from your computer memory.
Now remove the floppy and then restart/reboot your computer.
17) To stop this virus coming next time to your computer you see to it that you download the "bootminder" file from
"www.freebyte.com/bootminer ".This file will get downloaded within 5 min.
18) Bootminder Help in this way :
Whenever you shutdown ur computer u forget to remove the floppy from a: drive and may be that floppy would be sort of infected by wyx virus and hence in the next morning when u come and reboot ur machine (still floppy staying at his home drive a:) ur machine get affected by the virus. From a: drive the virus goes and resides in computer memory and hence if you try delete any file or format ur c: drive won't work. Here bootminder comes into rescue. It will always warn u before u shutdown ur computer that there is still a floppy in a: drive and until and unless u don't remove that floppy it won't let u shut down ur computer.
Pls. if possible. provide these info to all others.
Thanks,
Best of Luck from my side.
Shinu
