I formatted a friends HD and reinstalled Windows 98. Now at startup it stops and says vnetbios error, press any key to continue. Then it boots up after hitting a key. Dialup Networking does not respond when double clicked. When you right-click it just says move and copy. I tried removing DUN and the rest of the communication accessories and reloading them. It comes up cant find file after file. But it doesn't even seem to be using the CD when for searching. As soon as I click, it says can't find. I can access the 98 cd by autorun so it seems to be working. Could a bad modem cause this? The modem shouldn't affect just opening DUN, should it?

Hi there

It appears Netbios could have corrupted your DUN files.

Go into add/remove programs in control panel. Click on WIndows Setup. Look in communications for Dial Up Networking. Uninstall it (it may mention some other program require DUN uninstall them as well. Just make sure you note them down)
Reboot and re-install

If that doesn't work remove all network components reboot and install Client for Microsoft Networks. This should pick up CLient for microsoft Networks, Dial up Adaptor and TCP/IP. (if it installed IPX/SPX remove it.) If TCP/IP does not appear install that. IF NETBIOS has appeared remove that as well.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips.
The vnet problem went away but when it finds new hardware it can't find a driver and when I tell it where to look it right away says no driver found. It doesn't even look for it on the CD. It's like the CD isn't there, but it seems to work ok for music and auto-run when you insert a program disk.
