I tried installing a Cannon CanoScan FB620P on my Windows 98SE computer (AMD Athlon/Asus mb) using the worthless factory CD, Canon Creative Image & Scanner Setup, VERSION 1.1. Attempting 'acquire image' with Adobe PhotoShop Deluxe 2.0 made the scanner buzz for a second then gave these errors: 1)ScanGear-cannot communicate with scanner, scanner may be off or off-line; and 2) Twain problem-Photo Deluxe has a problem communicating with your scanner,Restart Windows and try again,If you still have problems reinstall the software for the scanner. Windows control panel showed the scanner as off-line. My printer's display also showed off-line and could not be brought on-line. This Canon CD is garbage!
I un-installed ScanGear and deleted the scanner from the control panel, then deleted Twain manually. I downloaded from ScanCraft CS-P v3.6.6 from http://consumer.usa.canon.com/techsupport/index.html. After installation, running ScanCraft yielded: Other error - Error code: 0x10ff0800. The Windows control panel didn't show evidence of any scanner hardware!
Then I followed Lennart's hallowed advice and reset the parallel port in my BIOS from EPP+ECP to EPP mode. This helped. Now, I can scan an image with ScanCraft and use my printer. Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 still locks up constantly, but it doesn't crash my OS.
EPP mode is a band-aid fix. Someone else said MP3 players use ECP. And Canon's online tech support clearly recommends ECP mode. I will never buy another Canon computer product again!
By the way, you should always reboot after installing or un-installing software. And, BIOS settings can be accessed during bootup.

Yeah, this is pretty confusing. I used my N340P on Windows 95. The BIOS was set to ECP and it worked.
Now I moved to another computer, with Windows XP (once I thought Windows was the problem) and the BIOS was in
ECP+EPP1.9: Error 0x10ff0800
ECP: Error (but it worked on the other comp)
EPP1.7: Error
EPP1.9: Works detected as ECP S
The BIOS offered other configurations, but I won't change them now, since it's working.
