Comment: I have a Canon LBP-800 printer set up as the network default printer (on a client machine--Windows Millenium). My computer (Windows 98 First Edition) is the network server--only two machines at home. When I print a job, the printer status window displays garbled messages. For instance, it should say "printer ready" or "no paper" but instead I get something like #@$$$**** (not exactly). I deleted the printer and removed all references in the Registry and reinstalled the driver. Same results. Jobs print OK though. Sounds are correct also.

Reply: (edit)I don't mean to sound harsh or rude, but I can never understand why so many come to a general forum regarding printer problems when the support sites for HP, Canon, Lexmark, Epson, are some of the best for solving the problems regarding their products. The below site is for Canon support and I hope it helps you resolve the problem. http://www.usa.canon.com/html/cprSupportDetail.jsp?minisite=10000&a=b&navfrom=ProdS

Reply: (edit)John T. Thanks for your link. I linked to your Canon reference and found nothing. My printer doesn't even exist. Search resulted only in BJC800 Canon Bubble Jet Printer, S800, Multipass 800 Multifunction Printer. It's impossible to send an email because each time, one has to enter a product name. Since my Canon doesn't exist in their inventory, I keep getting bounced. Frustrating.

Reply: (edit)Eureka. Finally found a solution. Canon France suggested setting the parallel port to EPP in the BIOS setup (which it already was) and then to reinstall the drivers. Of course, none of this worked. I tried tracing back to approximately when the problem occurred. In March I had installed Easy Desk Software's RegRepair 2000. In looking at the Registry, it was the only new installation that fussed around with fonts. I deinstalled the software, removed all traces from the Registry and voila!, my printer status windows are in English again and not garbled.
