Our printer goes through the motions of printing, but will not print anything on the page. (We changed the ink, both colour and black, and it doesn't help.) Any ideas about what is happening, and is it worth fixing?

Hi,

Sounds like the printer head is clogged. A common occurance in the the Canon 4XXX series, especially if they are allowed to sit for extended periods without printing [a week or longer].

Try running the "Clean Printer Head" option in the Printer Set Up dialog several times. If that doesn't help, contact the nearest authorized Canon service center [check their website for locations]. There are NO user servicable parts on these printers [trust me, I tried].

Finally, the replacement costs of these units is so low you may want to consider buying a new printer.

" . . . install your win95 or win98 agean."

Sounds like an EXTREME measure to me. Have the printer checked out first before you start screwing around with your OS.

Sounds to me like your print head is clogged/dried out. The best, most economical solution is to remove the entire cartridge, remove the ink tanks, then soak the bottom 1 inch of the print head in common rubbing alcohol. after 24 hours, shake off excess alcohol, reassemble cartridge & tanks, re-install cartridge, run "Clean Print Head" utility, then try printing.
If it prints well you are in business, if it prints but not well or not all colors, repeat the above steps. If nothing at all prints, try "Print Test", if all colors are there, remove drivers & re-install them them try printing. If it still does not work right, a trip to a Tech is in order, although a new printer is so cheap nowdays, it may be cheaper to buy a new one. This cleaning tip is the only one that Canon endorses.
Good Luck,
Dennis

I just went through this myself. People don't understand that the black-only ink tanks have their oun print heads. I popped one of those (new) in mine after all of these suggestions and more (=>) to no avail. The hardware just died. Time for a new printer. It's a shame because that 4100 was a PRETTY printer, even if it was noisy and bad at what it did.

You may try this...find a place that will do a full return and purchase a new BJC-4400. This printer will work with your 4100 drivers. I did this. The new printer printed with ALL of my old cartridges. The printer hardware had just failed...it wouldn't push any ink. Who knows where the break was? It would cost too much to find out. It was a good excuse to go out and buy the HP Deskjet I always wanted...
