I just spent a week rebuilding a Win98SE machine. I installed the last piece of software (logictech cam) and now I cannot view any web pages. I can ping IP addresses, and people can ping me, however I cannot ping a hostname (ie www.google.ca. Also I cannot go to google.ca whether I type http://www.google.ca or http://66.102.7.104. I tried deleting all network components and reinstalled but it does not seem to help. I have the same problem wheter I use dial-up or cable internet. Also when I try to update spybot I get the message 'cannot allocate socket'. With my dial-up (b2b2c) I have a web accellerator installed and it now always tells me that it has been disabled because there is a software conflict. I don't want to have to start all over and reinstall Win98. I am hoping someone knows how I can fix this.

Also what firewall are you using? try to configure the settings
If you uninstall then reinstall Spybot, then that should correct that problem
Also you may have a look at this link below,
cannot open any web pages

hi Bob,

I tried reloading the modem drivers by going to device manager and updating the driver. This did nto seem to work because it just kept telling me that the best driver was already installed. So I removed the device and then rebooted. The modem was found as new hardware and the drivers were installed. Now it just reinstaleld them from the windows directory so I'm not sure if that is sufficient. This did not fix the problem so I downloaded and ran the IEFix utility. When I run it I get 'a required dll file msvbm60.dll was not found'.

Sorry Bob I forgot to mention that I don't think I have a firewall installed. I usually use Zonealarm but I hadn't installed it yet. Guess that might have avoided this problem in the first place.

Bob I found the dll file on another Win 98 machine I have. I copied over and then I was able to run the IEFix, however I still have the same problem. Tonight when I get home I will try to ininstall/reinstall spybot.

Hi bccamper, Bob, hello everyone,

I downloaded and ran the IEFix utility. When I run it I get 'a required dll file msvbm60.dll was not found'.

You will need to download Visual Basic 6.0 Run-time Files

That will get rid of the error message and allow you to run IE FIX.

Your issue sounds more like corrupt winsock settings.

Download and run LSP Fix. This tool will repair the Winsock 2 settings.

Best Regards and Wishes,
Mesich, Webmaster of mesich.com

Well I tried the LSP Fix and it didn't see to help either. Does anyone have any other suggestions. How about hijack? Is it worth a shot?

It is possible , but not likely?, You can download HIJACK THIS and paste your log here on the Analyzer Page to see if you have any nastys on your system.
Also you may try this anti-malware program to see what may be lurking on your system Ewido Anti-Malware
Have you tried a over the top install to
repair/replace your corrupt or missing files?

Have you contacted your ISP ? support@b2b2c.ca or (800) 965-9065

Okay I will try those two things. I have talked to b2b2bc and Shaw cable (my HS ISP). Neither are willing to be too helphelpful as I can ping IP addresses and they can ping me so as far as they are concerned the network is working fine and the problem lies within my machine.

The malware program you referred to seems to be for Win 2000 or XP. Is it okay to use on Win 98? Also if the last two suggestions don't work so you think I should just bite the bullet and reinstall windows or do you honestly think we can resolve this?

Sorry I just realized I read your note wrong and I wasn't suppose to paste the hicjack log here. I did paste it into the analyzer page and had one nasty, which I removed, but it didn't help. You referred to a over the top install. What is that? Do you mean reinstalling Windows over top of what is already there? Doesn't that wipe out everything else you have installed?

This extract from a website might be of interest (re Paltalk):

"Many popular free programs available on the Internet contain malware. Here are a few examples of the offenders: BonziBuddy, Comet Cursor, CoolWebSearch, Gator, IEPlugin, PalTalk, Search Assistant, WebRebates, Windows Search Bar"

I found another forum today that talked about doing an over the top install. It looks like that resolved the problem. Thank to everyone for their suggestions, especially Bob.
