Sorry for the length...
I recently tried to install WinDVD on my 98SE box and after doing so, found that I got about 3-4 error messages on startup and could no longer open the communications folder (dial up networking). I got an error stating that rnaui.dll linked to a library that is missing.
I followed MS directions to fix this, by replacing clean copies of the following files in C:\Windows\System:
wsock32.dll
rnaui.dll
msvcrt20.dll
rasapi32.dll
rnaapp.exe
rsaenh.dllThis solved the startup issue, but I still could not get into the communication folder.
I next ran System File Checker and replaced several of the above files again. When I restarted my machine, I get the following error message:
Explorer.exe has preformed an invalid operation and will be closed.
In the Details view, I noticed that the error happens in shdoc401.dll. I cannot get past this error, and it occurs when booting to safe mode as well. Sometimes the taskbar shows up and I can navigate the Start menu, but that is all.
Any help is much appreciated. The MS support site did not yield anything for me, but I hope one of you may.
Thanks!

Microsoft pretty much explains in the repair article to try and use the repair tool for this problem, per attached.

Sorry. I meant Windows Explorer. I cannot get to the point where I could try the above solution.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

I had the same problem a few days ago,
and have solved it by reinstalling ie6.The computer starts up with an error message saying it cannot start explorer because of an error with shdoc401.dll, this is a dll wich is part of ie5.
solution:
find a cd with ie6, open startmenu, execute
and and type (path)\ie6setup.exe.This solved the problem for me.
Good luck Arjan
