Comment:

Trying to install Windows 95 on the 386SL laptop. I keep having trouble, it won't go past the screen where it asks for custom setup, portable setup, typical, etc. Whatever I choose, then it says "Problem reading Diskette" and has OK and Cancel. Cancel exits Setup. OK brings the box back. I have tried using my own diskette made off the CD-rom, also tried many other "Diskette No. 2" for Windows 95 (Aug. '95 version).

Whatever I do, same error.

Send me an email address and I can send you disk #2. Replacing a damaged disk is not pirating of software.

Could it be having problems reading the 1.68 meg DMF format of the disks?

I didn't even think to ask if they were DMF or NON-DMF disk. My set is NON-DMF. In case some don't know DMF means the disk has been reformatted to the 1.7mb size. NON-DMF means it has not been reformatted and fits on a standard 1.44mb floppy.

Yeah, the only floppy set I have is an upgrade and they're DMF. But the first disk with the initial setup files is a regular 1.44. Since he's having problems with disk 2--and apparently has tried several different ones--maybe his old 386 can't read them.

I had the 13 disk set of Win95 at one time. Full install, not an upgrade. As DAVE said, the first was 1.44 and the other twelve were 1.7 DMF (Dense Media Format). I've since (long ago) formatted the entire set to 1.44 floppies to use as spares. Yes, silly move I know, but I was young then, and if I'd known then that I'd be here on this forum today.......

Anyway, what I wanted to input here is that the 386 shouldn't have a problem reading DMF disks. I had an old 286 clunker (weighed a TON!) in which I put a 720KB 3.5" floppy drive. (The original A: drive was a 5.25" 1.2MB. That's as high as the bios would go for hardware ID.) I used DRIVPARM to configure the drive as a 1.44MB. It had no problems reading DMF floppies.

Sorry, lots of verbage for not providing an answer to the initial problem. ;>)
