Comment:

I cannot access jpg files I cut and paste, but can access files I copy/paste. I can't view previews of them. When I try to open them in Photoshop (or anyother program) it says "Could not open "C:\*******.JPG" because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties' command in Windows Explorer to unlock the file" only problem is there is no unlock function. I also cannot view thumbnails anymore. Help!

Looks like you're copying and pasting old threads too:

Did you check the google search Tufenuf provided?

The files may be 'read only' so any changes can't be saved.

Yes I did copy part of someone elses since they described my problem also. I was initially searching for a solution. I reposted the question because I couldn't see the link Tufenuf referred to and the message was a couple years old so the solution may not be applicable. Thanks for your reply.

Are they on your hard drive or a cd? What happens if you use internet explorer to view the jpg?

It may be a matter of the file being used by another process. If you copy and paste then the copy is not in use. But if you cut and paste then you're still dealing with the original file and whatever may be using it. The generated error about it being 'locked' may just be a default response by your photo software because it doesn't know exactly what's going on.

Is this something that just started or has it always been this way?

Try using save as, rather than copy/paste or cut/paste.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

The problem started when I fully restored my computer from a virus. We had to reformat the C drive, then copy an older full system backup on the system. We also uninstalled Norton and installed a new virus protector called AVG. The problem is on my C drive. I downloaded the photos from my camera and need to get access to them. The ones I cut and paste to another folder are locked now.

You're definately using 98? (XP, having to 'own' a file seems to have that problem more often.)

Right click on one of the uncooperative files and choose 'properties'. Does it show 'read only'?

You didn't say if you could open the file with internet explorer.

This isn't specifically about jpgs but is a general fix for that message in photoshop

Are you trying to cut and paste FROM the camera to the HDD? If so, that won't work. You need to copy them.

I don't recall there being a built-in "My Pictures" folder in Windows 98. Or, did you create that folder yourself?

Yes Jennifer, My Pictures was a sub-folder of My Documents in W98.

If you are handy in DOS you might be able to recover them, as Windows will not be running. In DOS you will need to create a new empty folder, then copy the files from the current folder into the new one.

If necessary I can help with this but would need to know the exact path to the locked files.

some other bloke...
