Check IE for the 128-bit encryption - click help and about IE and see if it says cipher strengh 128-bit. If says anything other than 128-bit, that will cause your problem. There is a fix in the Micorsoft data base.

Hi Fred,

Make sure the site you are trying to access is safe before doing any of the below.

Norton shouldn't be causing the problem, but there is a possibility that Zone Alarm could be causing trouble. Try disabling Zone Alarm and see if the site loads. If it does, there is your problem. If not, keep going...

Add the site to your "trusted sites" Zone in Internet Explorer. To do this, go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> click Trusted Sites -> hit Sites... button -> type the site's full address (up to the .com) in the box and click Add. You might have to uncheck "require server verification" if the site's address doesn't start with https. Then click OK.

With Trusted Sites still highlighted, click the Custom button and make sure the box on the bottom has the custom settings on "low". Then go thru the menus and make sure everything says either "Enable" or "Prompt" (if it says Prompt, you will have to click "OK" whenever the site tries to use the option). Then click OK twice to save your new settings. Close all of your browser windows and re-open one and try the site again.

Also make sure Java is installed by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced. Scroll down until you see "Microsoft VM" and make sure "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" is checked. If it's not, you need to check it. You might be prompted to go to microsoft.com to download the java virtual machine if you don't have it.

Good luck =)

If there is a proxy server setting displayed, you will need to remove it temporarily while you access https.
If your browser is not capable of secure communications, you will get an error when you try to access these links. If you use Netscape, you should be running Netscape v1.1 or later. If you are using America Online, you should download the newest version (3.0 or better), which includes a browser with the required secure socket configuration.
A "socket" error can mean a problem with the way your browser or service provider handles secure socket layer (SSL) transmissions. What you need to do to be able to connect to a " port 443". You may need to update your browser to a current version.

your registry being damaged could prevent access to https.

If you have problems accessing https page then it's possible that your firewall has blocked access to all "HTTPS" pages

Also, JAVA is part of all too.

Fred,

Did you have any luck with the suggestions? I have the same problem, tried all of the above and had no success. Also tried to upgrade to IE6 but of course can't since the setup program (both via web and CD) cannot access the sites needed to complete setup.
Very frustrating.
