We got this computer at an Auction. It has been fine until today. It posted that Cannot find win.Com. It won't do anything. We are not computer saavy and do not know what to type when. We do not have the original Windows 98 CD. we have XP that goes with this computer but not 98. I think it said version 4. I have been through several other posts looking for something, anything and just am lost.

I assume 98 is installed. First try this. Tap the F8 key on startup. It should come up with a boot menue. Choose command promp. Type in scanreg/restore hit enter choose a date to go back to if that don't work you can try this.
Find someone who has a 98 computer. Slave your drive to there harddrive. Copy win.com from there drive it should be in C:\windows\system

When you get to a command prompt via F8, type VER and enter. Post back what it says.

Don't you just love it when people come back to either answer more questions, or retrieve the info which has been provided to them on their topic?

My theory on the missing OP is that they took some ill advice and are now too busy taking Format C: lessons to post here. Besides, they likely forgot and forever lost the way to get back here again anyway.

My theory also applies to missing hymens among many other items missing. Do I like it?

I'd much rather they lurk for answers already given for it seems they are not only newbies to a computer but forums in general as well. They tend to self-distruct so quickly and are so un-appreciative to start with I haven't helped one in many many years. So I guess the answer is I don't care one way or the other. I just like to pop that hymen joke every once and a while.
