Hi All,
Recently I changed my isp, now I notice I get quite a few -THE PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED WITH -CANNOT FIND SERVER. I don't know if it's my machine, software or isp, I was wondering if anybody would have any ideas as to what would be causing this. When your system can't find google, yahoo or zdnet something is wrong, I would appreciate any suggestions as to what could be causing this,
thanking you again for your help and input, charlie

Go here and follow RE 2.

Post back and let me know if it helps.

A few other things that may help.

What ISP did you change from and what ISP did you change to?

Did your old ISP require a proxy server?

Hello John,
I switched from at&t to netzero, I don't believe they require a proxy server. I will checkout 32063 and re2,
thanks John,

Hi again, John,
I just downloaded that post, I failed to mention the tech support at my isp is not very good, and I see from other posts neither is it any good at a few other isp's.
I will try those two suggestions and hope one will work. It's back enough dial up is slow and to wait and get this error message is taxing on my blood pressure,
charlie

LOL, well if it doesnt work and this post if off the main page you may want to create a new post and link this one to it so that people know what has been tried.

The next step would be to do some Registry editing and reinstalling a few windows components

NetZero doesn't use a proxy server, but if you are using the "free" ad bannered service you have to wait a couple of minutes for it to download the advertising components, at least that's what I remember when I tried it out last year. Note: It will do the ad's download each and everytime you connect.

To attempt to clairify what DHCP and DNS have to do with it.

DHCP is the protocol which your ISP uses to give you computer a address on the network when you dial in. It also tells your computer what servers to connect to in order to resolve DNS. (and a few other things like default gateway and subnet mask. Not impot here)

If you ping yahoo.com you get a reply that tells me your DNS is working properly.

If you do not get a reply from the Domain name, but do get a reply from ping 66.218.71.198 then that tells me your DNS is not resolving properly.

(when you ping yahoo.com your PC looks to the DNS server to resolve the IP Address. In this case the IP address is 66.218.71.198)

Now that is out of the way. There are many programs that can interfear in this process from time to time. Most common are proxy server programs which take over your DNS no matter what your ISP assigns it.

One such program is the New Domains software that was mentioned in the previos post above. Most people miss the New Domains software as being a proxy because it doesnt show up in any of the normal proxy locations. Instead they were tricky and edited the winsock2 registry key so that it would hide its little face. (Thier are many other proxy softwares out thier that can also cause problems.)

Another problem i have found is when people install fire wall software then disable it from running or delete the program with out uninstalling it properly. (This causes the same problem as the New Domains software. Fire walls edit the winsock2 key in the registry)

With all that said, lets get to the results from the tests. (if you have tried it)

Did you get a responce from Ping yahoo.com?
Did you get a responce from 66.218.71.198?

Hello John,
Thank you for that in depth response, I get a positive pinging the yahoo name and web address. I will ping google now to see if I get a positive, also a positive response. I use avg as a firewall, I don't have that program called new domains (I had never heard of it).
I thank you again for the follow-up,
charlie

Bring up IE and go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab.

I wanted to go to the pc magazine site and tried to get to google, and my favorite announcements popped up -cannot display the page and can't find server. I'll ping google and pc mag and see if I get a positive, now I get timed out. This internet can make you crazy, hopefully the computing.net tech team can bail me out. The tech support at my isp is worthless,
I appreciate all the help you have given to me so far, and hope you can suggest other possibilities, so I can have a "normal" computer again,
charlie

Sorry i didnt get back here last night. My home ISP had a server crash :(.

Lets first check your dial up settings.

Go into dial up networking Right click on the conection you are dialing out from. Click on the server types tab, then on the TCP/IP settings box. Make sure all radio butons are set to server assigned.

If they are then try this.

open regedit. and browes to HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services

Delete the winsock2 key.

close regedit.

Now we will rebuild that key.

add/remove programs.
windows setup
remove dial up networking.

networking.
add in ipx/spx protocol.
remove TCP/IP.
(Also remove any adapter like VPN adapter, ATM adapter, PPP adapter, all but your NIC and dial up adapter)

Reboot the PC.

Reinstall TCP/IP.
Remove IPX/SPX (unless you use it.)
Reinstall Dial up networking.

Reboot and see if it works.

Try:

IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections tab.

Set it to: Always dial my default connection.
Might be that simple...

Give us feedback.

You wouldn't happen to have something called: NewDotNet on your StartUp, would you??

Start/Run: msconfig
Select: StartUp tab

Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, and Paste a copy of the items in the System Configuration Utility StartUp tab back here.

Might help us figure out what is going on for you.

Hello John & Zucchi,
I just got back on the net and want to try the procedures you suggested, I would like to have one working properly. My other has been ruined by that garbage netsetter, it is blocking my browser from coming online, I might have to format my hd and wipe out everything on my drive since I can't get rid of that junk. Hopefully, with your help, I can get this one to work properly,
thanking you guys in advance,
charlie

Hi again Zucchi & John,
I switched to always dial my default, I looked at my startup and the programs listed there are the commonplace things everyone has on their machines. This machine is only 5 months old. John I must have silly putty between my ears as I lost the trail after getting into dial up networking (?)right clicking on connection I am dialing from. I have been trying to find the outlet that would get into that area where I could make the changes you suggested. Could you post back to help this simple guy pick up the trail again,
thanks John,
charlie

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll to Security, check the following boxes:
o SSL 2.0
o SSL 3.0
Click OK.

Also:
Quit Internet Explorer (if it is running).
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Security section
Clear the Use PCT 1.0 selection.
Clear the Use TLS 1.0 selection.
Click OK.
Some Web sites do not support the PCT 1.0 and TSL 1.0 protocols.

Last option:
Many secure sights require at least 128 bit encryption to connect. Check if the default IE encryption is only 64 bit.

Open IE, go to: Help in the toolbar.
At the bottom of Help go to: About.
The screen will show encryption (Cypher Strength). If it is less than 128, go here to see if there is an update for your version:
